Fighting for our freedoms is literally in my blood. My third great grandfather, John Harper, was part of the 28th Regiment of U.S. Colored Troops up in Indiana. He and his fellow soldiers joined the Union troops traveling down to Galveston, Texas to free the enslaved on June 19, 1865.

As Nevada’s Attorney General, I've taken on big drug companies, corporate landlords, and insurance companies who have hurt and cheated us.

When we moved to Nevada my oldest son asked me, “Dad, why would you move us to a state that’s ranked last in education?” He was joking – but I took it seriously. So I ran for State Senate. I worked with both parties to find common ground, fund housing projects, fight for jobs, and protect people.

I never gave up. I went on to earn two master’s degrees, a law degree, and a PhD. I became a public school math teacher. I met my wife, Berna. And we raised four boys together, including my nephew.

Medicaid ensured he and I both were able to see doctors and stay healthy. Food stamps kept us from going hungry. And education gave us hope.

Upward Bound – a federally-funded college prep program for first-generation, low-income students – helped me get into college. Then my junior year, I became a dad. A few months later, I became a single dad.

My family worked hard, but we struggled. There were nights where all my brother and I had to eat for dinner were stale candy bars that my father found next to the dumpster. We weren’t broken. But we didn’t have much. And we knew the only way out was hard work.
