Two Belarusian sisters live in the shadow of the Białowieża Forest, the last of Europe’s great primeval forests. Dasha is the shadow sister, unlovable to all but her shining sister Natalya, who she will follow anywhere.

So when Natalya is spirited away across the forest, Dasha does what she has always done: follows.

Inside the forest she meets the folk, refugees of the industrialized world whose tales were once told across Europe and beyond. Displaced and sequestered in the shrinking forest, their stories have been distorted and forgotten. And now, a strange force known as the Storyteller refuses to let Dasha go, stealing her inner voice and weaving her into the world’s tales. Dasha’s only hope of escape is to reclaim her lost voice and forge her own story.

Dasha hesitated. She stared into the huge raven’s black beady eye, a dark pool rimmed with grey pebbles, until she could name what she saw inside it.
“Wisdom and kindness,” she said aloud. “I almost didn’t know how to recognize it.”
She ran her hand along the glossy feathers of his neck, then swung one thin leg across his back. The moment he spread his great wings and lifted them into the air was the first time she was aware that, if she were ever to leave the woods again, she would be a girl with a story that could never be told.
