My lack of memory regarding my pre-adult life makes the notion of remembering my birth and its circumstances something of a joke. I couldn’t tell you a thing from my own knowledge. I can tell you the hospital I was born at, thanks to medical records. I can tell you what day it happened, thanks to medical records. I can tell you what sex I was born as, thanks to medical records. I’m not a fan of that last one. I’ve come to view my birth as a mistake. Not just through the standard ‘I wish I’d never been born’ refrain found in depressed people, but specifically through ‘I wish I’d never been born this way’, found more specifically in transsexuals. I should not have been born male. That has become very clear as time has passed and my brain has found great issue with the body it’s stuck in. It’s a little shameful to consider how often the phrase ‘I was born wrong’ passes through my head. And I can be reassured by other trannies to the ends of the earth that there’s nothing inherently wrong with me, that it’s okay to be trans, that it’s better to find myself later than never at all. But I didn’t ask for this. Selfishly, childishly, with balled fists and tearful eyes. I never asked for this. I don’t want to be like this. I just want to be allowed to be a girl. Instead, the circumstances of my birth made me this.

Evo will also be without one of its most prominent on-air talents. Stephen “Sajam” Lyon has been a mainstay of Evo finals broadcasts for the past 11 years, and he’s been able to parlay this familiarity into a successful career creating content as a fighting game community personality. But when Saudi Arabia bought partial ownership of Evo, he described the situation as “only a matter of time” in a post on X, before adding in a follow-up message that “it feels like the pieces [of the community] that belong to fighting game fans are shrinking all the time.”

Lyon further addressed the situation, as he often does, during a personal Twitch stream last December. Despite working for fly-by-night esports organizations, United States military recruitment campaigns disguised as fighting game tournaments, and crypto-funded events throughout his career, he felt like he had to draw the line at accepting money from Saudi Arabia.

“They’re not investing in these things because they just believe in them,” Lyon said. “It’s sportswashing to gain social capital.”

Lyon did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action
Two years ago, my words first touched upon the people of Glitch City. The struggle to get through each dark day of their lives. The pasts they reckoned with. The drinks they sipped to warm up another cold, lonely night. The parallels to my own time mixing drinks and seeing lives change.

This year, those words have extended into an entire book. About forty thousand of them, to be specific. My blood, sweat, tears, and a little karmotrine poured into a complete compendium. Written during the single hardest year of my life thus far. But I kept the fire burning, despite it all. Thousands await it, having already spent their limited, mid-recession cash on it. One said they’ll stick around just to see it. That pressure is not lost on me. I can only hope it will be good enough for them.

Next year, I’ll be leaving the very bar job that I first compared to Jill Stingray’s, after four trips around the sun working shifts that hid it from me. At some point, when the sun is high, I’ll be able to hold that book in my hands. Published. Proven.

I thank you, Glitch City. I mixed drinks, and my life was changed.
