Every year since January 1, 2022 on New Year's Day, Lauren Shippen (The Bright Sessions, TWO THOUSAND AND LATE) releases an episode of New Year's Day, a fiction story about two extremely different magicians named Charles Chambers and John Fogg who meet in 1890 and via a magic trick disaster become immortal. They meet up every 13 years to catch up, and each episode is one of these catch ups, so we've seen them in New York, LA, and Chicago in 1890, 1903, 1916, 1929, and we're up to 1942.
They started out despising each other but their relationship is developing into what I can only hope is love, and I feel tortured that I have to wait an entire year to get even a hint of a clue as to where this is all going. I guess that is the point. This is Lauren Shippen, the story is funny and philosophical and the quality is superb and will ruin all fiction for you because nothing is better than it. Nothing period. I listen from the very beginning every year—episodes are short so this is not overwhelming, it's only a complete joy. Listen to "Chapter
