📸 Yucca Point, Kings Canyon NP🌿 📖 I read this area of Kings Canyon is arguably the deepest canyon in N. America. The confluence of the South & Middle Forks of the Kings River is only at 2,260' of altitude, while towering above the confluence is Spanish Peak, at 10,051' tall. ⛰️ #StunDay #Scape #Eck

In May, you get to catch some wildflowers and namesake yuccas in blossom with your vista from Yucca Point in Kings Canyon NP. Gorgeous view under clouds and blue sky, and you get a glimpse of the road descending down the canyon to the Kings River flowing beneath Spanish Peak. Super tough hike, btw. Now you know.

Spermophilus lateralis is a strikingly colored ground squirrel. This species has a golden-red mantle that extends from the head down over their shoulders. One white stripe, bordered by two black stripes, extends horizontally down the body, similar to chipmunks. Although chipmunks have a white stripe through their eyes, Spermophilus lateralis has a whitish fur eye ring and no facial striping. The back is gray, brownish or buff, and their undersides are whitish or yellowish-gray. The tail is brownish-black above, and reddish brown on the underside. 📸 Male Desert Spiny Lizards display vivid blue or violet patches on their throat and belly, with green and blue on their tails, and they can change colors in order to absorb or reflect light off of their scales. 🦎🌿 Now you know. Also, tough birding at 101, so you get #herps instead. 😅 #Reptiles

After hiking for miles through Sequoias, my wife went "ooh, oOH, OOH!!!" and pointed vaguely through the woods...and thus my very first frame of a Pileated Woodpecker became this preening male clinging to the mossy side of a humongous tree at the back of the Crescent Meadow in SNP...

A river runs through it...the Tokopah river cascades down the valley beneath the Watchtower, affording several beautiful spots to stop and enjoy the water rushing through the forest...

...this was our favorite spot, below some rapids and in the shade...

Now we've rounded the corner and cleared the treeline below the looming Watchtower spire, the huge waterfall is off frame to the left...

Tokopah Falls, cascading 1,200' down from the top of the canyon. Humans for scale, down there on the rocks to the left...where I took a video of the lower section of falls.

Peeps are just crazy. Fact. 📸 Castle Rocks Massif, at 9,088' and looming over the Kaweah River, is one of the most pristine, and impressive granite climbing areas in CA. That's right. Peeps climb that spire. Not many tho, the first wasn't until 1950. Now you know. #MountainMonday ⛰️ #Stunday #Eck
