🔶 MP for North Cornwall ⚖️ Lib Dem Shadow Attorney General Promoted by Lib Dems at 4 Tower St. PL15 8BQ
💬 During a recent debate in Parliament, I raised the provision of mental health services and lengthy wait lists in rural areas like ours.
🐝 It was great to visit Chrissi Berry at her Exam Centre in Bodmin recently, to learn about the brilliant work she does in supporting home-educated students and those outside mainstream education.
Some of North Cornwall’s high streets are in real need of rejuvenation, but first the Council needs the powers to make it happen. 👇
🏃 I had a great visit to Bodmin Leisure Centre recently, to speak to the team about the brilliant work they're doing to keep so many different local people and community groups fit & healthy.
🚨 After talking to lots of North Cornwall's businesses about the EPR packaging/glass bottle tax (including Camel Valley, Tarquin's Gin, Buttermilk, and Bluntrock) I had the same message: The costs are punishing them, and the reams of paperwork is mpossible to navigate.
🚨🚨 Right now, Bude is at risk of losing vital funding for accessible showers, changing, and toilet facilities at Crooklets and Summerleaze beaches. I went to speak to AdSurf, the disabled surfing charity based in the town, to hear why this money matters so much to residents.
💬⛑️ Great to speak to BBC Cornwall (Spotlight) about the threat facing our search and rescue teams here in Cornwall. New CQC registration requirements risk piling costs (and red tape) onto the rescue volunteers who are already stretched thin.
🚨 ❌ Some brilliant news today as Labour has officially scrapped its mandatory Digital ID scheme! 🎉 I said it from day one: this was an infringement on civil liberties, with a scheme costing BILLIONS at a time where the public purse was incredibly stretched.
One of the first stops of my ongoing 'Summer Tour' this year was visiting the Memory Cafe in Week St. Mary. ☕️ I spent the afternoon chatting with residents over a cuppa, hearing about life in the village and catching up.
🚨📣 During the introduction of my ‘Rural Healthcare Bill’ to Parliament recently, I touched on the complete lack of NHS dentistry in North Cornwall.
⛽️ 🔀 Recently I made the case for North Cornwall to be included in the Rural Fuel Duty relief scheme directly with Treasury Minister Dan Tomlinson MP in a recent meeting, citing our rurality and high dependence on cars due to a severe lack of public transport.
🚨 STATEMENT ON LAUNCESTON COLLEGE AND ATHENA LEARNING TRUST I welcome today's decision for Athena Learning Trust to step away from Launceston College and transfer it to a new trust. 👇
🚨 TWO YEARS and counting as North Cornwall's MP - here's a look back on just some of the campaign wins we've achieved so far! 🎉 👇
🚨 🚴 I had an excellent meeting with DEFRA Minister Baroness Hayman, joined by other Cornish MPs, where we discussed plans for North Cornwall’s Camel Trail extension.
🚨 After Lloyds Bank decided to stop allowing cheque deposits at post offices, many of my constituents were forced to travel long distances just to pay them in. That's why I was so glad our campaign for the bank to reintroduce the service was a huge success!
🚨🚨 KEEP TRUMP'S INTERFERENCE OUT OF FOOTBALL ❌ Today I've officially tabled a Parliamentary motion calling on FIFA to uphold sporting integrity and root out corruption, following reports that political intervention by Donald Trump overturned a ban for a US player 👎
🌤️ 🚴 Recently I joined Cllr Mark Burnett in Camelford to discuss our plans for the Camel Trail extension - a proposal which would really revitalise the town, and bring much-needed footfall back to our high streets to support our local businesses. 👇
🚨 It's now been just over TWO YEARS since I was elected as North Cornwall’s MP! It’s been the greatest privilege of my life representing my home constituency. But what do my constituents think of me so far? 🤔
🚨 ✍️ Today I've written jointly with Cornwall Councillors Nicky Chopak & Faye Emery, to call for a wider public consultation on the Future Coast Bude programme.
🚨 These last few weeks I’ve been campaigning hard to save North Cornwall’s volunteer coastguards. In a debate in Parliament yesterday, I made it clear that the MCA (and the Government) should be urgently exploring a range of alternative options...👇
🚨🏦 Big win for my North Cornwall constituents - after our campaign pressure, Lloyds have announced they will once again accept cheque deposits until 2030!
🙂 Lovely visit to Beaumont Court care home in North Petherwin recently. I met with lots of residents and chatted with them about England's performance in the World Cup, the Liberal Legend John Pardoe (who many remembered fondly!), and then stayed for a delicious Fish & Chips lunch.
⚽️ Last week I visited Wadebridge School's brand new 3G football pitch with Cllr Rosie Moore, where we met the new headteacher Mr Simmonds down at the grounds.
🚨 I was DISGUSTED this week to see former South West Water boss Susan Davy given a £270,000 bonus after her COMPLETE record of failure. ❌ Meanwhile, my North Cornwall constituents lack even the most basic upgrades to sewage waste infrastructure.
🚨 〓〓 This week is Speak Cornish week! We're so lucky to have a rich culture, history, and identity here in Cornwall, with weeks like these to bring us together & celebrate what makes us unique. Kernow Bys Vyken! Cornwall forever! 〓〓
🚨 ❌ SOUTH WEST WATER BOSS GIVEN £270,000 BONUS despite COMPLETE failure! It's disgusting. 🤢
🏥 I'm working cross-party with fellow Cornish MPs to stand up for Cornwall's NHS - and ensure its independence from any Cornwall / Devon ICB merger. Decisions about our healthcare shouldn’t be taken further away from the people who rely on it. 👇
🚨🎖️ This week is Armed Forces Week where we honour everyone who has served, and everyone who continues to serve our country.
Huge congratulations to the DIVAS group in Bodmin, a project by The Women’s Centre Cornwall, who were finalists for the Frontline Service Award! 🎉
🙂 Huge thanks to Beacon Academy for making the trip up to Parliament yesterday. It was an absolute pleasure to speak to their Year 6 pupils and hear all about their brilliant suggestions for North Cornwall.
