A lovely soft day at Morgan's North, Limerick last Saturday with the #IrishGrasslandsProject. An incredible 119 species recorded including Hoary Plantain, thought to be brought to the area by German settlers in the 1700s. The things plants get up to 🙄 Ivy Broomrape (Orobanche hederae) steals its nourishment from the roots of ivy, so doesnt need to be green. Snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus): meekly getting sprawled on here by lots of lovely things (ALT), but it can be an awful bully. Like other #InvasivePlants (Rhododendron, Leycesteria etc) 'twas originally planted in big estates as cover and feed for game birds @bsbibotany.bsky.social #wildflowerhour

An exciting new plant for me this week: Hairy Bird's-foot Trefoil (Lotus subbiflorus)- no hairy birds involved🐦 In Ireland, just in the far south, on dry, sandy soil. Its flowers are small, orangey-yellow, usually in pairs (sub-bi-florus). And its sooo furry! #wildflowerhour @bsbibotany.bsky.social

New for me this evening, naturalised by a Dublin canal: Stinking Tutsan (Hypericum hircinum), glowing in the evening sun. For @wildflowerhour.bsky.social's #OrchidChallenge: the strange, cinnamon-scented (to me, anyway) Bird's-Nest Orchid, Neottia nidus-avis - the Latin name says it all 🪺🐦‍⬛ No green bits needed at all, as it gets all it nourishment from soil mycorrhizae, and it's pollinated by flies and ants.

Excited to see Mountain Avens today, with its gorgeous twirly seeds heads. Its name 'Dryas' says it has leaves like oak (where Dryads live!); 'octopetala' means '8 petals', rare in members of the Rose family which usually do things in 5s. Mine had 16 though! @bsbibotany.bsky.social #wildflowerhour
