The card itself. For the card I was asked to add some purple to his coloration to give him a bit more Black mana flavour (which is fair). I made this change digitally, as I felt the original colors were quite good as they are and I did not want to change the actual painting.

The card featuring Blech. The card text reads "Whenever you gain life, put a +1/+1 counter on each Pest, Bat, Insect, Snake and Spider you control."

For the color rough which was also done in acrylics, I started with an orange wash and while I was very happy with my chosen palette, the result was a bit too warm for a Black and Green mana card. To cool it down a little, I used a brown wash for the final painting instead.

This was one of those pieces that just came together exactly like I wanted it. After I saw the brief I attempted to make multiple sketches like usual, but I just kept coming back to the first vision I had. He is a perfect chunky lad and I love him.

"Blex, Loafing Pest" for Secrets of Strixhaven!

A traditional illustration done in acrylics featuring Blech. Blech is a pest, a creature that exists on the plane of Strixhaven. Pests come in many shapes and sizes, often looking like something of a mix between reptiles, amphibians and grubs. Blech is a particularly large, chunky pest of mostly red and green coloring with a white underbelly. He has bright red eyes, many teeth and spines and is lazily lounging on a moss covered branch, surrounded by various small creatures of the forest.

And finally "Subterfuge", the fourth card I did for the Lorwyn Eclipsed set!

Lorwyn elementals are hybrids made up of all kinds of different animals and shapes, in this case the head of a dolphin, forearms of an iguana, body of a dolphin, body and wings of a dragonfly, body and wings of a bird and the tail of a dolphin. We see the creature partially under and partially out of the water as it breaches the surface.

The card! I didn't know the card was going to have Flying, I was given a specific type of bird to work with which I am aware looks flightless, so that was not my choice haha. In some ways though I think it adds to the humour.

Sketches! I made no color rough for this one as I pretty much knew where I wanted to go with it, so I jumped straight into painting. I had a lot of fun making this guy look like a goofy goober!

"Flock Impostor" for the Lorwyn Eclipsed set!

A traditional illustration featuring a changeling, a shapeshifter creature in the world of Lorwyn. In the image, the changeling has taken the rough shape of a bird, poorly mimicking the birds that surround it as it has kept its distinctive Changeling face with huge forward facing yellow eyes, and its entire body is blue. The changeling is looking directly at the viewer with an uncanny smile as the birds around it look either mildly confused or pretend not to notice the obvious impostor.

My initial prompt was to feature the jackalwere in humanoid and feral form, ready to ambush desert travelers. The reference provided featured a rougher looking creature with wild hair and tattered clothes. I was asked to change it to a more "civilized" looking design and to add a feminine variant.

First sketch I submitted for the Jackalwere illustration. I features a jackalwere in humanoid and in feral form, looking as though they were getting ready to ambush desert travelers.

The second, updated sketch I submitted for the jackalweres, featuring a more "civilized" design with neater looking clothes, as well as a second humanoid form that was more feminine in appearance.

"Jackalwere" My contribution to the 2024 Monster Manual! This was a fun one to paint ☺️. The sketches were done digitally, the final is an acrylic painting.
