A short statement from me following the outcome of yesterday's selection panel interview.

I want to thank everyone who supported my campaign to become Sussex Mayor — the members, councillors, activists, and affiliates who gave their time, encouragement and trust. Your belief in a fairer, greener Sussex has meant everything.

Thank you especially to UNISON, CWU, Disability Labour, the Co-operative Party and SERA for your nominations and endorsements, and to every CLP that put their confidence in me. Together, we built something positive, values-led and people-focused.

Although I wasn’t shortlisted for the final ballot, I’m proud of the campaign we built — rooted in fairness, sustainability and community.

Over 15 years running my own business, and through my work as a charity CEO and district councillor, I’ve worked with senior teams in local government, the NHS and across public services. I know how to get things done — by listening, building partnerships, and turning ideas into action.

It’s disappointing that too often, politics overlooks the skills and perspectives of those who have led and delivered in their communities. Real leadership comes from experience, collaboration and a genuine connection to the people we serve.

I wish the candidates on the final ballot well. Sussex deserves leadership that listens — and delivers.

As for me, I’ll be taking time to reflect and to decide where my energy can make the biggest difference next. The commitment remains the same: building fairness, opportunity and dignity from the ground up.

I'm delighted to have the support of Bognor Regis & Littlehampton Labour Party Cllr Michelle White. The waiting list for family-sized homes in Sussex is years long, in some councils it would take nearly 20 years to clear the backlog.

Cat has experience as a district councillor but also in business and the voluntary sector. A Mayor of Sussex would have regular dealing with all three and Cat would be able to hit the ground running.

From her help with my own election campaign I know she’s a campaigner who understands local issues but also the use of traditional and social media. An advocate for the people of Sussex will need such communication skills.

Cat understands the vital need for social housing, especially in areas where rents are high, including rural areas where young families have to move away.
