The Holocaust destroyed nearly the entire community. No synagogues survive today, but the local musuem preserve ritual objects and archives. Nové Mesto’s Jewish history remains a powerful reminder of a once‑vibrant cultural center.
Jewish merchants and craftsmen powered local trade. The community thrived thanks to Nové Mesto’s market privileges and strategic location. It was known for education, philanthropy, and cultural life that shaped the whole region.
By the 18th–19th centuries, the town became a major Jewish center. At its peak, Jews made up over half the population. They built synagogues, schools, charities, and even founded Hungary’s first Jewish high school (1856).

Made it to my town of birth Bruges to the new #Brusk museum for the exhibition curated by @peterfrankopan.bsky.social on how Bruges was connected to the world over time. Truely fascinating (although a link to the americas and the far east would have been an interesting addition)

The Roman Forum of Bavay in northern france, close to Valenciennes. Truely a remarkable archeological site
