i know first hand how expensive this isssss (please buy more of my books, lolsob) but also—i love the work i got for The Sovereign so you will surely not be disappointed!

after yesterday’s many shenanigans (incl. a 14k trail race), I plan on living on the couch today and tearing through The Thrice-Bound Fool. Might go wild and switch it up with John Gwynne’s upcoming Wolves of War if I want to change gears.

An ARC of The Thrice-Bound Fool by Christopher Buehlman sits on a carpet. It’s a cool orange-ish book with some giant stone statues and mountains and two tiny people and a donkey at the bottom, who are our heroes. Presumably.

in other news, we commence upon the rewrite for #Warmongers, which includes this fancy calendar of the sort that I usually only use for my athletic training plans (which says a lot about the overlap of these pursuits). Today: writing exercises and rewriting a chapter with a more epistolary POV.

just finished my first solo play-through of ironsworn by @shawntomkin.bsky.social and it was such a fun storytelling experience. my first completed solo rpg, def not my last. won’t say much more about it for reasons but here’s a hint of what went down and who i was.

half a character sheet, an open notebook, and three dice (a d6 and two d10s)

two domain cards and one theme card from ironsworn: delve. they depict a sea cave that is also a series of barrows that are haunted.

three asset cards from the game ironsworn: waterborn for those who have skill and affinity with water, skirmisher for those proficient with spears, and bonded for those with strong relationships that are important to them.

so close—i don’t even think that i’m going to need the 200k that i thought this book would be. just finished the last big fight scene. not going to say too much about it, but the choreography was inspired by the duel of the fates scene in star wars episode 1 and Eivor vs. Kassandra (IYKYK 😏)

back in may, i had the chance to interview Antonia Hodgson, author of one of my favorite books this year, The Raven Scholar. it’s a big book that, to me, heralded the return to massive page turners, and it was clever and twisting in ways that satisfied even this jaded reader. plus, it was just FUN.
