Regarding yesterday’s gunshots at the Yesler Community Center and increased shots fired throughout District 2:

Yesterday's gunfire at the Yesler Community Center occurred during an announcement and celebration of the City's Families, Education, Preschool and Promise Levy investments.
Thankfully, no one was injured but the community center was struck. This was another glaring reminder that we must treat gun violence with greater urgency.
I was at the event and left just moments before, but many others were still there including young children. Sadly, gunshots have become all too commonplace for many in our community, especially District 2. Families experience ongoing trauma, including from repeat experiences with gun violence. This is wholly unacceptable. We should not have to worry about our own or loved ones' safety when waiting for the bus, grocery shopping, visiting the community center, or even in our own homes.

My team and I are working closely with the mayor, other councilmember offices, the Seattle Police Department, Seattle Public Schools, and nonprofit organizations interdicting violence in community.
We must invest in our communities and come together to break down silos and finally make a difference on gun violence.
This includes getting guns off our streets and out of the hands of kids, providing wraparound supports and services to young people at risk or already in cycles of violence, working closing with SPD, and investing further in immediate safety measures that have been stood up for kids and their families.

Learning From the Success of Seattle's Domestic Workers Ordinance

Dear Senator Pedersen:
I write to you in strong support of HB 2355 Establishing labor protections for domestic workers. This bill would provide clear guidelines to employers and protections for domestic workers in Washington State.
The City of Seattle's Domestic Workers Ordinance (DWO) went into effect in 2019, setting a minimum wage, mandating rest days, and providing additional protections for nannies, house cleaners, yard workers, and other domestic workers. HB 2355 would extend many of the same protections statewide.

I recently met with the Domestic Workers Standards Board of Seattle and heard from workers and employers who have benefitted from Seattle's DWO. One worker shared that fear is high among workers, however, their ability to educate coworkers and organize for protections statewide gives her hope and strength. One employer described the gratitude he and other employers had for the education and clarity in expectations from the City, especially regarding worker pay and hours. Attendees also highlighted the need for consistent protections and expectations across jurisdictions given the broad geography across which workers must take jobs.
The tens of thousands of domestic workers across Washington State deserve fair pay and safe working conditions. Their work, usually done by women of color, often goes overlooked and underappreciated. I implore you to prioritize HB 2355 and get workers and employers the protections and guidance they need to succeed.

PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the Page Act of 1875 prevented Chinese women from entering the United States; and WHEREAS.
the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 barred Chinese laborers from entering the United States: and
WHEREAS,
the Geary Act of 1892 renewed the Chinese Exclusion Act and required Chinese residents to carry Certificates of Residence; and
WHEREAS,
waves of racially motivated violence occurred across the United States, including the Tacoma Riot of 1885, which resulted in the destruction of two Tacoma Chinatowns and the permanent expulsion of Chinese residents; and
WHEREAS,
on February 7, 1886, approximately 150 Chinese residents fled Seattle and approximately 350 were forcibly expelled from their homes and placed aboard a ship bound for San Francisco and then China in what became known as the Seattle Riot of 1886; and
WHEREAS,
the Geary Act of 1904 indefinitely extended the Chinese Exclusion Act, leading to a dramatically reduced Chinese population in the United States; and
WHEREAS,
Seattle's Chinese community was repeatedly displaced, first from the waterfront, then to Second Avenue South and South Washington Street, and later to King Street, where Chinatown remains today; and
WHEREAS.
we remember those whose lives, families, and communities were irreparably harmed, and we honor those who spoke out in solidarity against exclusion and injustice; and
WHEREAS,
people of Chinese heritage continue to enrich Seattle's cultural, civic, and economic life. and we honor them and all immigrants who contribute to our city:
