To me an occasion is a catalyst.

What is the occasion of your poem?

‘Isis: A Flightpath’ is a response to the many forces we inherit, transmute, and pass on. It was written to celebrate a group of women who have spent years cultivating the power of mythology and preserving an urban wilderness habitat in downtown Atlanta. The specific occasion was its inclusion in an artistic history of the space and its teachers."

Suzanne Zelazo's contributor bio: "Suzanne Zelazo is a writer, editor, and educator with a PhD in English. Her projects seek to integrate creative expression and the body. She is the author of two poetry collections from Coach House Books and is the editor or co-editor of several books on and by female artists.

My best friend’s wedding!

How did the occasion of your poem shape the form that your poem took?

At the wedding, I read ‘Having a Coke with You’ by Frank O’Hara, as part of a creative take on the Seven Blessings ritual at Jewish weddings. My occasional poem is about that experience, drawing on some elements of form and language from the O’Hara poem itself."

An excerpt from an interview with Shelagh Rowan-Legg: "What is an occasion?

A moment that is marked by ritual, whether those be the rituals of formal agreement or those forced upon an individual or group. A moment in time when what is happening or about to happen is given space to be reflected on, to consider, to understand its place in the human life and its wider implications.

What is the occasion of your poem?

‘Winter is Coming’ was written around the winter solstice. ‘The Function of a Detonator’, around the occasions of genocide and ethnic cleansing, in this case of the Palestinian people."

Continued excerpt interview: "Was this poem written for a particular occasion, or did the occasion emerge through the writing of the poem?

For ‘Winter is Coming’: I am not a winter person, and I always felt I had to enact some kind of ritual to prepare myself for the coming months of cold. It started to feel like an annual occasion that I would have to mourn the loss of warmer months and find ways to keep my heart and soul alive. ‘The Function of a Detonator’ did not begin as an occasion poem, but eventually was shaped as such, as I realized how the Palestinian people have had to develop their own rituals to deal with the Nakba and the genocide of their people, find ways to survive and adapt, as too many have done before them."
