India: Hijra communities have existed in South Asia for centuries and have historically occupied social and ceremonial roles. Today, many Hijra people identify within trans and gender-diverse communities while also maintaining distinct cultural traditions. Oman: Khanith is a culturally specific gender category documented in Oman. Traditionally, Khanith refers to people assigned male at birth who occupied social roles and expressions that did not fit neatly into binary expectations of masculinity.

Across the world, Indigenous Peoples have long held diverse ways of understanding gender, identity, and belonging—rooted in culture, community, and ancestral knowledge. This Pride, we celebrate identities that continue to exist, resist, and thrive."

Slide 2 : "So-called “U.S.” and “Canada”: Two-Spirit is a term adopted in 1990 by many Indigenous Nations to describe diverse gender, sexual, ceremonial, and social roles. It is not a synonym for LGBTQ+ and its meaning varies among nations. Hawaiʻi: Māhū refers to people who embody both masculine and feminine qualities and have historically held important cultural and educational roles. Mexico: Muxe (Zapotec communities in Oaxaca) is one of the most internationally recognized examples of Indigenous gender diversity. Muxes have historically occupied distinct social and cultural roles within their communities."

Slide 3: "So-called "Brazil": Among some Indigenous peoples in Brazil including discussions documented among communities such as the Tikuna and in broader Indigenous queer organizing-there is growing visibility around gender and sexual diversity through Indigenous-led language and frameworks that connect identity with ancestry, territory, and collective life. Chile and so-called "Argentina": Indigenous LGBTQ+ activists from Mapuche communities have connected Pride celebrations with language revitalization, territorial rights, and cultural resurgence, emphasizing that colonialism affected both Indigenous sovereignty and understandings of gender."

Slide 4: "So-called “Australia”: Sistergirl and Brotherboy are Indigenous identities grounded in community, culture, and kinship, rather than simply Western definitions of gender. Aotearoa or the so-called "New Zealand": Takatāpui is a Māori term reclaimed to describe Māori people who are LGBTQ+, emphasizing the inseparability of cultural and sexual/gender identity. Samoa: Fa’afafine are a recognized and respected part of Samoan society, representing a gender identity with deep cultural roots.
