I (25F) inadvertently went along with a coworker’s assumption that I’m dating my grumpy weirdo colleague (35M). Word of that spread to others, and it somehow escalated to a point where I publicly asked him out for lunch in front of staff, and to make matters worse he seemed really, really happy about it.

Now we keep lunching together, and he’s actually kind of sweet. I don’t know how to tell him that it’s only because everyone thinks we’re dating. AITA?

So yes, he saw her for the first time through that haze of smoke, perched on a concrete half-wall while staring up at the lights and open sky, unlit cigarette clamped between two fingers—but Ben knew that she spent most nights sleeping on his friend’s couch; that she tagged along on theme park dates as a single rider; that she was co-dependent on one-half of the engaged couple inside; and that—an assumption on his part—she was miserable about it.

The engagement.

And so he’d approached, committing her pale-yellow shift dress to memory while closing that distance. Even now, he remembers the way it floated off her as if a size too big; how it complimented her hair (a dark shade of brown he wanted to know in the sun; half-up-half-down, baby wisps flicking up at her hairline with a will of their own); how her hand bunched into the fabric at her knees when he asked if she needed a light.

Her head had shifted his way, and from the look in her eye, she’d heard about him too: Poe’s shitty friend, who didn’t text back, and ignored most calls, and who was so often a no-show to these types of things.

God, Ben remembers it all.
