Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· 17h I'm really looking forward to doing Powerful Owl pellet analysis with @lucyparkerpaul.bsky.social and Andrew Dinwoodie from @birdlifeoz.bsky.social with the Grade 5s from Tamborine Mountain College tomorrow. They get so excited when they find a possum jaw or a bat claw in their pellet.

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· 2d It is astonishing how quickly when out of the hollow the Owlets switch from a look of slightly overwhelmed worry to one of very centred intentness.

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· 7d Powerful Owlet on its 1st day in the sun having fledged from the hollow the previous night. In the evening the adult female went to the hollow & came out with a Ringtail Possum tail. This is super interesting as we're not aware of Powerful Owls being known to cache food in the hollow.

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· 9d The older sibling of the new Powerful Owlet.

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· 9d Another of the new Powerful Owlet.

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· 9d A new Powerful Owlet! 2 weeks ago at this location, there had been one Owlet, but there must have been another one hiding in the tree hollow as today there were 2.

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· 13d Checking on the Powerful Owlet that fledged on the 4th of July ("Jefferson", also showed interest in airplanes) it was the classic "that's some really good scat on the ground", looks up, "Oh."

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· 13d ... There's even a possibly hollow about 100m away.

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· 13d ... But 2 nights ago a bit bored we thought we'd give the site another go and at a particular spot along a creek we suddenly trilling, and the next morning nearby there were two Owlets in the same tree and an adult in the next tree ...

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· 13d A new Powerful Owl family! About 4 years ago, a friend mentioned her friend had heard a Powerful Owl from her house. These proved very elusive over the years, and we'd pretty much given up on them thinking that they had perhaps been hunting and didn't live there ...

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· 16d The mama of the Powerful Owlets checking her talons.

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· 16d The sibling of the Powerful Owlet. If we had to guess we'd say this one was female as the mask reaches to the edge of the face, and its sibling is male.

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· 16d Powerful Owlet in a Brisbane park this morning. The family of 4 POwls were all in the same tree still quite close to the nest hollow, but it's quite a busy park so each breeding season the adults move the new Owlets to a quieter bit of bush nearby. That hasn't happened yet.

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· 20d Male Powerful Owl asleep at dusk yesterday. He and his partner have an Owlet in a nearby hollow that should emerge in the next week or so.

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· 21d Powerful Owl pair in suburban Brisbane this morning, female with a Ringtail. Though the female went into the tree hollow for almost 2 weeks, breeding didn't work out. Hopefully they have better luck next year.

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· 24d In the early evening the sibling of the Powerful Owlet was looking out of the hollow, clearly contemplating making the leap into the void. This morning it had fledged and the siblings were about 1.5m apart in the nest hollow tree, well tucked in the leaves so the other birds wouldn't mob them.

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· 24d A new Powerful Owlet yesterday that fledged out of the hollow the previous night! It was roosting in the same tree as its parents (the brown blur to the left is its mama). This seems to be a very successful Powerful Owl pair, making two new Owlets every year like clockwork.

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· 26d A new Powerful Owlet! This was from a newly-found-this-year pair & nest hollow. Its floofy front seems quite brown ... not sure if it's an unusual morph or bathing in brackish water. From the feather development it looks like it may have been out of the hollow for a while #brisbane #birds #wildoz

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· Jul 13 When you find a lot of whitewash on the ground, always look up. The Powerful Owlets mama was in the next creek down the gully.

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· Jul 9 Recently fledged Powerful Owlet

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· Jul 9 Checking in today on the Powerful Owlet that fledged from the hollow on 4th July it seemed to be doing well and was high up in a gum tree about 6m away from its mama.

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· Jul 5 They're the only Australian bird that can fly carrying more than their own body weight.

Dr Nick 🦉🇦🇺@doktrnick· Jul 5 You can see how far apart the Powerful Owlet and its mama are in this photo.
