By contrast, some transport modes have become much smaller emitters since 1990: 🚌 Buses and coaches: down from 5.3 to 2.3 MtCO2e 🚆 Rail: down from 2.0 to 1.7 MtCO2e ✈️ Domestic aviation: down from 1.5 to 1.2 MtCO2e
International aviation is the standout growth story Emissions from international flights: ✈️ 15.5 MtCO2e in 1990 ✈️ 36.2 MtCO2e in 2024 That's a 133% increase
International transport is becoming a bigger part of the picture. In 2024: ✈️🚢 International aviation and shipping produced 41.2 MtCO2e That's 27% of all transport emissions In 1990, international transport accounted for just 15% of transport emissions
A lesser-known trend: van emissions have grown sharply. Light vans emitted: 📈 11.3 MtCO2e in 1990 📈 17.9 MtCO2e in 2019 📈 18.6 MtCO2e in 2024 Meanwhile, emissions from cars and taxis have fallen from 72.3 MtCO2e in 1990 to 59.5 MtCO2e in 2024
One reason transport stands out: other sectors have decarbonised much faster. Since 1990: 🚗 Domestic transport emissions fell by just 11% ⬇️ Total UK domestic emissions fell by 53%
Transport is now UK's biggest-emitting domestic sector, acc new gov data for 1990-2024 2024 = 30% of all UK domestic greenhouse gas emissions Broadly unchanged from 2023, but still 10% below pre-pandemic levels in 2019 🧵 👇

Net zero is more than the only credible way to tackle climate change. It's also a boost to economic growth: high skill, highly productive, higher pay jobs, the majority (90%) small and medium Scottish businesses. @jessralston.bsky.social asks: "Can clean industies scale up faster to meet demand?"
Free government grants for air con going largely unclaimed 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣,0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ - number of air-to-air heat pumps - aka reversible air-conditioning units - Government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme could support by 2030 4️⃣5️⃣ - number of vouchers claimed so far
As @jessralston.bsky.social explains: 🌡️ Heatwave = less efficient gas and nuclear power plants, as well as less efficient solar power and electricity cables 🌬️ Low wind levels ⬆️ Increased demand due to cooling electronics 🗺️ Affecting whole of Europe
