Working on #ruinsOfCalaworm 🇩🇪🌈 Turn-based Dungeon Crawler after 90s german cult #roguelike "Die Gemäuer von #Kalawaum". Soundtrack: @composertom.bsky.social Key Art: @edjiearts.bsky.social DEMO AVAILABLE:
Stil on my run with an epic-sized world. Getting a ton of useful data - nerfed one toxic interaction between Spire Sprout and Fire Vampire. Also fixed a bug with the new "uncharted" mapDisplay - turns out, I wasn't accessing mapData from active mapView, but from current playerLocation, lol.
Little QoL tweak, but to huge effect ... when looking at the map, it'll now render Fog of War directly adjacend to non-border tiles (e.g. walls, liquids), plus any 2nd gen FOW-tiles adjacent to those - this way you can see at a glance, where you haven't explored yet. #ruinsOfCalaworm #roguelike
If you could create any physical media box set what would it be? You choose the theme. My choice: Bad Movies that are low key Masterpieces.
And this year, on July 24th, the thing he set out to do, has come full circle for the 6th time. 67k+ lines of code, 100% scope creep, 100% human art, 100% spaghetti code. 6 years ago, on that date, he wrote the very first line of code in the #PureBasic IDE. How it started:
#ruinsOfCalaworm uses a mix of procGen areas (generic "passages"), and handcrafted puzzle areas, randomly pulled from a pool, which is ever-expandable via the Map Editor. 👀 ProcGen regions are not as intricate to navigate, but are great for pacing, and provide more relaxed exploration. #roguelike
Currently trying to tackle an epic-sized world. Not spoiling how many regions there are (exact amount rolls in a range, depending on Exploration Difficulty), but it is close to what the original #Kalawaum from early 90s had. Stuck in the vaults for quite a few maps now, and I yearn for the light. 🥹
I don't consider #ruinsOfCalaworm super-difficult (compared to traditional RLs) - at times, tho, it can feel pretty oppressive and lonely (music by @composertom.bsky.social emphasizes that). Down in the vaults the light radius is smaller, and a few Survival elements (e.g. Equip Strain) do the rest.
Nemesis Foes in #ruinsOfCalaworm are a mix of two base enemy types: primary defines appearance and stats, secondary bequeathes bonus traits and abilities. They have randomly generated names, and are stored in a unique library. On subsequent runs same combos come with familiar names. 👀 #roguelike
The story in #ruinsOfCalaworm is presented as persistent collectible notes from various point of views. One of the storylines "The Innkeeper's Tale" retells the story of the original "Die Gemäuer von #Kalawaum" - that obscure early 90s german Dungeon Crawler that my game is based upon. 🤫
What's up with the sudden influx of visitors on my itch-page since yesterday. Did I do sth. wrong? Sth. right? Y'all looking forward to the release of #ruinsOfCalaworm?🤔 I usually see some momentum after releasing a new Demo build, or making a devlog post, but haven't done neither in some time ...
And here's the corresponding code. Pretty proud of myself here, because it was a one-shot that worked right off the bat (no AI help ofc, since writing code has always been an end in itself for me, and won't have a robot take my favorite toy from me). 😎
#ruinsOfCalaworm now has has a budget Nemesis System. 🫣😬 #roguelike #indieGame
Haha, I love my random Champion Name generator! 🤗 #ruinsOfCalaworm #roguelike
On the Plateau of Leng, the Cold is your most cruel adversary. #ruinsOfCalaworm #roguelike #indieGame
Visited a local #Banksy exhibition this weekend. They deliberately asked people to shoot photos and share them with other peeps. Fine, can do that: ♥️
Read a trilogy once, which was all about Dragon-fucking.😬 Wasn't funny or sexy in the slightest, tho, quite the opposite actually. Drab and full of suffering, and quite the attack on chauvinistic genre-tropes (think "Handmaid's Tale"). It was well-written, but wayy too depressing for me, lol.
This map was quite interesting to navigate. #ruinsOfCalaworm uses a mix of handcrafted maps picked from a pool, and a few procGenerated ones. This was a generated one, and at first sight it fooled me: I kept picking my brain what Map that was which I designed here, lol. Mission accomplished. 😊
Here's a really cool Solo-Dungeon Crawler I got as a birthday gift. Well, actually it's a puzzle game with 200 challenges, where you have to lay down Tetris-like corridors to connect treasure and exits, while avoiding Monsters. Super-Fun, with a smooth difficulty curve. @finselbix.bsky.social
Done with THE WYVERN'S SPUR (2nd in the "Finder's Stone"-trilogy). Just as enjoyable as AZURE BONDS, albeit different in tone, and noble Giogioni was a delightfully unusual protagonist. Some intricate plotting going on here, the whole thing almost feels like a "Knives Out"-Mystery, set in Faerun.
