Val'dran is very fond of maps. Even inaccurate ones give him a lot of information, either into the area or the person who made it, and he can use it to make his own.
He's no cartographer, mind, but he often makes himself little maps when he's out and about to orient himself.

In addition his scarred right hand has increased chronic pain in cold.
