Bar Los Platillos Volantee, Cádiz 🇪🇦 1st stop. Walked past it and saw the UFO logo and quirky interior. Restorative after the soulless craft beer bar. Shame the good products and personality can't combine into one pub. Birdcages at the bar, fully local, no Platillos (tapas dishes) though! 🍻

Cerveceria La Barra, Cádiz 🇪🇦 1st visit. One Cerveceria that isn't just a snack bar. Strong tap & bottles covering superior European beers & Spanish craft. Yakka Tripel from Murcia is nicely yeasty with Belgian character. Prices fair. Venue is really drab and crap soundtrack, so use the terrace 🍻

Taberna Casa Manteca, Cádiz 🇪🇦 1st visit. Classic city institution est. 1953. Two bar rooms partitioned off by a chain, walls plastered in decades of memories. Popular with locals, known for the prawn fritters which were swiftly emerging from the kitchen. Utterly fantastic. 🍷👍

Taberna La Manzanilla, Cádiz 🇪🇦 1st visit. A great 2nd stop. Imagine Casa de Guardia in Málaga in a small unspoilt social pubby space like U Jelinku in Prague. You have it here. Sherries with olives. Your tab chalked on the bar top. Charismatic frontman. History on the walls. Simplicity itself. 👍🍷

Ok, done the birthday announcement. Should we do some bars? Arrived in Cádiz 🇪🇦 La Cepa Gallega, 1st visit. Lovely little drop in bar which would fit maybe 15 people inside at a push. Local gossip and jokes. Despite the location not a fish-fryer in sight. Ham, cheese and tins. Wine & beers. 🍺🍷🧀👍

Abacería Cruz Vieja, Jerez 🇪🇦 1st visit. This area is more local and it shows. Initially prices seem higher but the tapas is handsome and each drink comes with a plate of unstalked marinated olives. Characterful interior and space online content doesn't do justice to, a real effort made 👍🫗

Tabanco El Pasaje, Jerez 🇪🇦 Already my 4th visit in 24 hours. 💃 @pelliclemag.com made it here first - but only by a few months!

Back to Birrópolis, Jerez 🇪🇦 2nd visit. This is the indisputable place for a reliably good beer in the city. Prices are good too - pint of Gulden Draak Quad €6, Ayinger Celebrator €4 local Farmhouse ale €4.50. Unsure if it has acquired a local audience though. Deserves to. 🍺👍

Café Central, Jerez 🇪🇦 1st visit. Cocktail bar. Ornate Neo-gothic wood fittings drew me in. No menu: "have whatever you like". Something dank & hoppy. Furniture a tad generic. Niche at the back looks the best bit. Venue heavily perfumed which is not a good idea! Crowd: ladies at leisure & their men😷🍺

La Bodeguita, Jerez 🇪🇦 1st visit. Bodega which is a much a sherry shop as much as a pub. Tio Pepe joint. Not a long running place, but traditionally, effectively decorated with exposed beams, barrels and wrought iron pillars. Oloroso and a plate of Butifarra €5 - a steal. Local life and chat 👍🪭🫗

La Moderna, Jerez 🇪🇦 1st visit. Legit, busy bar. Where to come to experience midweek customs and rhythms in an authentic tavern. Built into the old city walls, a surprise feature in the back room! Affordable tapas, good portions. Everyone's in a good mood. You'd think they'd won something... ⚽🍺👍

La Libreria, Jerez 🇪🇦 1st visit. The city's late night alternative hangout. It looks a little manufactured at the entrance but once in it works well. Table football, arcade machines, highly personalised. There is a library of sorts.

Tabanco Plateros, Jerez 🇪🇦 1st visit. Opening hours so unreliable that this is open despite saying closed online. One on the tourist Ruta de las Tabancos. All about the busy social narrow street with its covered canopy, less about the bar itself. Fino & Payoyo 🧀 a good combo 👍

Birrópolis, Jerez 🇪🇦 1st visit. Enjoyable little beer specialist tavern in whitewashed stone vaults. Ayinger, Het Anker, Kinnegar, Uiltje and Spanish craft on tap including Soul Fire from Jerez. Their Hazy IPA is fresh clementines and bracing but clean bitterness. Just the ticket. 👍🍺🍺

Ah, Spain 🇪🇦 and its opening hours Here we go again. Two Jerez targets either closed for siesta or longer despite advertised hours, and one other on holiday til 6th August. At least that frees up time for an ice cream, a wander around the cathedral and a nap.

El Pasaje, Jerez 🇪🇦 1st visit. Tabanco, c.1925. Is + isn't what I expected. Slightly smaller, a portion taken up with the Flamenco stage, which we'll return to later in the trip. Characterful bar. A notable sense of institution, with tapas prices to match 💃🍷

Tabanco San Pablo, Jerez 🇪🇦 1st visit. This is what I'm talking about. c.1934 tavern with 11 Jerez sherries from the barrel and a broad tapas range. Exposed beams, old pillars and horse culture alongside the usual bulls and Flamenco stars. No aircon, just fans. Fino is dry, cuts through in the heat 👍

Las Banderillas, Jerez 🇪🇦 1st visit. Small Tabanco with aircon 🪭 Sherry barrels, portraits of famous bullfighters & flamenco dancers. Attractive tapas menu and kind service. Supposedly very popular with locals+ tourists alike. I got here at opening. It's filling up since these photos!

The City, Leeds 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 1st visit. Kirkstall's adoption of former North Brew Co bar on Sovereign Street. Unlike Kirkstall's own taproom it is not well executed. Jumbled/clashing/cheap decor. Menu in the wrong place, bartender pointing it out to everyone. From one dull bar it becomes another.
