Last night I was introduced to Proper Yukon Gravel Riding, which included mud, dirt, sand, grass, one creek crossing, one beaver dam traverse, and yes, some gravel. 🤌

Today saw the first ever Pride parade in the teeny tiny town of Atlin, BC. Dozens of people came out in the rain — and sure, cue up the “there are dozens of us!” meme, but like… 400 people live here. It was really lovely.

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT: JUNE 30, 2026

We're looking for personal reflections, nature writing, travel writing... anything nonfiction that is neither strictly academic work nor hard-news journalism. We're hoping to build an anthology that ranges widely, with a diverse array of perspectives on the river from its headwaters all the way to the Bering Sea.

Accepted stories that run less than 1500 words will be paid $250 CAD.
Accepted stories that run longer will be paid $500 CAD.
Previously published work is welcome, so long as you, the writer, retain the rights.

Took a spin along the edge of the still-in-progress Whitehorse South Fuel Break yesterday. Flammable conifers coming out, flame-resistant aspens going in, to eventually form a living obstacle to wildfire on the city’s vulnerable south flank. Pretty cool.

My old pal Jesse Winter (who is not On Here; wise man) has his first book out today! It's a deeply reported, riveting look at the dangerous mismatch between 21st-century wildfire and our current ability to manage/fight it. A narrative set in Canada but relevant to us all. Recommended!

It's Tacoma's gotcha day! Six years since I brought him home from the racing kennel where he was born and trained to pull and run. A bittersweet anniversary this year, as we adjust to the news from last week that he won't be with us much longer.

Hey now, look what drops in a month! My old pal Jesse Winter has spent several years reporting on what the brilliant @johnvaillant.bsky.social calls "21st-century fire," that is, blazes bigger and hotter than our systems are entirely prepared for. This book is gripping and important. Recommended!
