Anyone who is seriously critical of AI, not least of all in Humanities and Education (my particular wheelhouses) -- critical btw, not dismissive, not ignoring -- needs to give this a look. Pg 1.
I finally made it to the big time! AI + internet scraping scam mail about Desiging Historical Games only 4 business days after publication😂
54, expert history pedadogue of 26+ years, competent historical game studies scholar of 20 years ... and when you're on vacation and Mom really needs the deck scraped for repainting-- you scrape!!!
Friends, Cincinnati Country Day School, is hosting a led-by-me workshop for educators on researching & designing problem space boardgames for classes, Sat. Oct. 3rd. For $20 registration, you get a copy of my new book too. Grateful for spreading word. events.veracross.com/ccds/96-Gaming
Look at this @davidmchugh.bsky.social only 2 days before my response this time!! Zuzu approves of me typing now btw. For me, having kids research (quickly or in depth depending on the project) and layout in diagram or in a fully written format a historical problem space blueprint is the key 🔑 /1
Hey Friends, can some of you do me a favor and goto my bibliography page and click the zotero link gamingthepast.net/theory-pract... And see if you get a zotero page like this and cam click on the entries.
If you're nerdy enough to know what this means, you'll know why I'm excited for this update 🙂. If not, I'm happy to explain.
Routledge Companion to Video Games and History should be out in November. Exciting news! My chapter "Historical Games in Class: An Introduction for Educators" was my, if you will, culminating overview on the topic before I dove into analog & Twine for the new book. www.routledge.com/The-Routledg...
Sorry if I already shared this, but as I get to the appendices of a long proof-read, this playful alliterative effort on my part still makes me happy.
A PSA brought to you by Shameless Self-Promotion: Because if you don't do it, no one else really can 🙂 This is a really important #gamingthepast point I've been making 16 years now in writing, 20+ in talks (this is GTP Second Edition 2023, p. 30):
Don't get me wrong. I'm very very grateful my library has access to Fregal and Sony music. But how in the !#^&%!( is this song under the "Hard Rock Trending Songs" List?
The boardgame will be designed using the Historical / Agential Problem Space Framework for game design that I have written about for years and will share even more widely in the upcoming Designing Historical Games for Classrooms. 2/
🗃️Any historians out there who can point me to reputably sourced images of Fascist propaganda like 1924 or earlier? I found this image from a museum and would love to show my 10th graders a few more.
Oh and shameless self-aggrandizement moment -- look who got into the curriculum guide!
Thought I'd share today's back-to-back AI-slop emails about my wonderful, amazing, transcendant books and the ways this sender could bring in the real recognition ... for a fee. I mean, other than being horrible, they're fascinating
All right, the cover is done and without D&D signifies thanks to the photo skills of an awesome senior and some of my prototype stuff. I'm happy!
I have some work I would like to do on defensible models in this proposed simple blog and someday article but, as a gift, here are the most detailed and recent pages on Defensible models in Gaming the Past Second Edition (2023). 3/
Day 2of 9th gr. prototype playtesting. Kids have been so great abt giving focused feedback and having fun while doing it! So proud! Folks, get students to design historical games! (Heck you can even read a book about it in August). Or design academic agential games in other fields -- works too!
Hey folks, CfP coming up for a Workshop on Analogue Games and the Ancient and Pre-Modern Past at Durham University hosted by cool HGS folk @drhelenroche.bsky.social and @peregrinekiwi.bsky.social. Looks great; wish I could be there! submission email in the CfP
In a big leap of bootstrapped self confidence (with misgivings) #WhatAGameDevLooksLike. 50-something high school history teacher and history book writer. I design history boardgames for my students; when solid enough prototypes, I share print & plays for others to enjoy, in & out of classes
Yeah it's great, isn't it! Janice, have you seen the new more detailed HPS diagram that'll be in the book? Adds the most common actions choices for space and for each A.R.T.M.O. (agents, resources, tools, metrics, obstacles). Maybe of interest as you teach? Always so delighted my stuff is helpful!
No amount of internet recognition could save me from this Giant Necrophage monstrosity in Void War
All right!!! I've got my ISBN and a summary and placeholder on a book seller!
Exciting! Here are the cover choices from the Routledge Designers. I was going to do a pool but lack the tool or time so I'll just shared them here. Anyone got preferences? I love this part; just wish it were closer to actual getting it in print time!
One of my terrific former students went back to China to visit family and gifted me this beautiful cup (and saucer), knowing well my firm addiction to coffee. My teacher-cup runneth over 🙂 (Confirmation picture I shall send to him now)
Talk at UK in Lexington went well. Made some new friends; found more people who'd never heard of the Historical /Agential Problem Space Framework & were excited by what it could do! Yay #gamingthepast Presentation: gamingthepast.net/theory-pract... HPS diagrams: gamingthepast.net/theory-pract...
First full run on Void War -- glorious loss (and yes I know I'm fiddling while Rome burns)
My talk at UK in Lexington seemed to go well today. Made some new friends; found some more people who had never heard ofnthe Historical /Agential Problem Space Framework and were excited by what it could do! Yay
