Popular Music Historian (and unpopular music performer). Lil Chief rep.
Flying Out record store & Neck of the Woods announced they’re closing today. More proof austerity isn’t the right govt approach when economic conditions are bad AND that the major events fund was a flop, given it did nothing for the grassroots of the NZ music scene which is withering before our eyes
Great to see my book out in the world - everywhere from Unity & Time Out through to Whitcoulls & Warehouse. Though it seems to get the best spots on display at the airport Relay stores. Perfect size to cover your face while you snooze on a plane?
Hopefully a nice encapsulation of the contrast between online haters and RL friends!
This drumkit's had a busy life. I got it for $50, 30 years ago. Since then, it's twice been used at The Powerstation; at every Lil Chief Records party; the last gig at Golden Dawn; the wedding for Ian from The Bleeders, & most recently was the kit for underage acts at Others Way. Now- a kid's party
Warehouse has my book for cheap! Only $32! (Though obviously independent bookstores are much better if you can afford the RRP)
I'm chuffed to have received such a positive response to my book, Songs From The Shaky Isles!
My new book can be ordered now from Time Out Books, available from Monday! Link in bio. The cover shot of Boh Runga is by Ian Jorgensen. The back cover shows Howard Morrison ( 📸 Auckland Libraries) and Troy Kingi (📸 Mieko Edwards). #nzmusic #nzhistory #bohrunga shop.timeout.co.nz/p/songs-from...
For those going to the Midwinter Ball, just FYI - Neverending Story is free-to-watch on Three Now and Labyrinth and Dark Crystal are on TVNZ+.
Here's a couple of items I couldn't fit in my article for @audioculturenz.bsky.social about unusual merch items. Greg Johnson did a shot glass and chopsticks!
My uncle and poet Eric Beach died last month. He moved to Aus in the 70s so was somewhat forgotten here. This is a poem from the Penguin Book of Contemporary NZ Poetry (1989) @pacificraft.bsky.social
The first era of Thee Golden Geese is coming to an end this Thursday! Special Halloween show...
Playing an early and FREE gig tonight. Enjoy the final weeks of Wine Cellar!
Thanks! I did finally work out what year Throwing Muses played Orientation. It was 95. Here is Kristin being interview in Rudman Gardens (now demolished).
Just a reminder: you have to vote for Bird of The Century this time around, because Bird of the Year has already been awarded...
Two more weeks to see the First Peoples exhibit at Auckland Art Gallery(ends Oct 29). This work looks amazingly 3d but is a flat painting.
Wrote about Auckland Town Hall's history for Audioculture and was helped by the team to find some great images. Worth a look even if you don't have time to read it... www.audioculture.co.nz/articles/the...
