NASA has hovered at 0.3%-.05% of the federal budget since the 70’s. In 1969, the year of the Moon Landing it was around 2.3% of the Fed Budget. Meanwhile actual Fed budget spending in ‘25 is 22% SOC Sec, 22% Medicaid + Medicare etc We spend 28x NASA spend on Interest payments on debt alone!
Pretty wild and illustrates something many of us know intuitively and upstream of a lot of our problems. Partially a consequence of such an individualist society. You also see it a lot with people being fine with X type of person *they* know as being good, but ‘others’ being bad (think immigration)
Yeah as much as I too have the “why don’t we spend on food, not bombs” once you learn what the government *actually* spends each year it’s kind of wild. HC reform could help cuz our spending is inefficient, but we spend almost as much on interest as on the military…
