Rep. Steny Hoyer
@hoyer
Dad. Proud Marylander. Congressman representing Maryland's 5th District. Chair of the U.S. House of Representatives Regional Leadership Council.
Happy Independence Day! Our democracy continues to be history’s greatest experiment in striving for a more perfect society. As we look to our next 250 years, let's renew our resolve to keep fighting for our Constitution & the ideals espoused by our Declaration of Independence. May God bless America.
Less employment opportunities means less workers, and a strong economy needs both. Last month's job report makes it clear: Trump's economic policies have the country going in the wrong direction. www.wsj.com/economy/jobs...
Republicans refused to extend ACA tax credits, and now millions of Americans are being priced out of their health care premiums. Losing access to affordable health care means working families will have to make incredibly tough choices to make ends meet. The American people deserve better than this.
Congratulations to our top participants from the Fifth District's Black History Essay Contest who shared their impressive compositions at our Open Mic Night! I thank the Life Journeys Writers Guild for helping recognize our talented students & their compelling works. Keep reading & writing, #MD05!
During Pride Month, we celebrate the progress made to deliver the LGBTQ+ community the rights, respect, and recognition they deserve. Let us keep working to ensure our nation lives up to the principles of freedom and equality by fighting against discrimination to protect all Americans' civil rights.
Marylanders are struggling in Trump's failing economy, & they're looking to their state & federal leaders for help while the Admin says, “you’re on your own.” Team Maryland remains committed to delivering for all Marylanders at this critical moment for our state. hoyer.house.gov/media/press-...
Glad to welcome #MD05's 2026 Congressional Art Competition winner Jenna Tran and her family to my office in the U.S. Capitol.
Great to join the 7th Annual Juneteenth Freedom Day celebration hosted by the Charles County Juneteenth Committee for a meaningful celebration of resilience and community. The work to achieve equality and justice for all continues, and I'm proud to be a part of it.
June is #GunViolenceAwarenessMonth, & we have more work to end this devastating epidemic that plagues our communities. As Majority Leader, I brought the Assault Weapons Ban of 2022 to the Floor to help protect Americans from gun violence. Let's keep working to build a better, safer America for all.
Being a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather are my proudest titles. To all the dads, grandfathers, and father figures whose love, support, and guidance help strengthen our families and communities, thank you for all you do. Happy Father’s Day!
161 years ago, news of emancipation reached the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas. Today we celebrate that freedom and reflect on our nation’s history of racial injustice.
Our farmers support our communities & economy, and that’s why Team Maryland pressed the Trump Admin to make emergency financial assistance programs available to farmers impacted by the April freeze & frost event. We will continue to support our farmers and agriculture communities across our state.
Honored to be presented with the Paralyzed Veterans of America's Gordon H. Mansfield Congressional Leadership Award by Carl Blake and Robert Thomas, whose leadership has transformed the lives of veterans that live with disabilities following their service to our country.
I was glad to celebrate the #MD05 students who received appointments to a U.S. Service Academy this year at our Academy Tea. These students exhibit great character, and I'm thankful to their families for raising such bright leaders. I wish these students much luck in their military service.
I was honored to attend the annual John & Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation’s Good Trouble Gala. My brother John inspired me & many others to make 'Good Trouble' to align our nation's policies with its principles. I will keep working to protect the victories he helped achieve.
I thank Ranking Member @meeks.house.gov and my colleagues for their partnership in this bipartisan effort. The Senate must follow the House and act quickly to assist Ukrainians as they continue to push ahead toward victory. hoyer.house.gov/media/press-...
Serving the people of #MD05 in Congress has been the honor of a lifetime. I’m proud of all we've accomplished, from making critical investments in Southern Maryland to fighting for civil rights & democracy at home & abroad. I look forward to continuing my work through the end of the 119th Congress.
I was proud to host the annual Educators Luncheon to honor our outstanding #MD05 teachers and support staff. Educators continue to face many challenges with grace and resilience. I'll keep fighting to ensure they have the resources to support our students' success within and beyond the classroom.
On Memorial Day, we remember the courageous men & women in uniform who gave their lives to defend our nation. We must continue to stand up for our democracy with the same devotion displayed by the heroes we honor today. May God continue to bless our troops, veterans, the fallen, & their families.
Republicans are ripping health care from millions and driving up the cost of living to support Trump’s tariffs, war, gilded ballroom, and now a $1.8 billion slush fund for his friends. As Americans struggle in Trump's failing economy, Democrats are fighting to lower costs for everyone.
Trump said he wanted to 'drain the swamp.' Instead, he has filled the sewer with corruption, cronyism, conflict, and chaos while taking a chainsaw to the Constitution. I will continue to fight to hold the President accountable and call out his Republican majority for being complicit in his schemes.
Barney Frank and I both came to the Congress in 1981 & have been close friends for over four decades. Across a range of issues, & on behalf of those in Massachusetts & the entire country, Barney was a tireless champion. He'll long be remembered for his courage. May his memory be a blessing to all.
It was an honor to join CSM's School of STEM and Professional Studies Spring 2026 Commencement ceremony and receive the 2026 Trustee Distinguished Service Award. I am grateful to receive this award and was proud to celebrate the achievements of our graduates. Congratulations to the Class of 2026!
Soon, the House will have a long overdue vote on expressing its support for Ukraine and our opposition to the Russian invasion. The people of Ukraine have shown tremendous courage in this fight, and Congress needs to do the same. hoyer.house.gov/media/press-...
Thank you to all who joined the 45th Annual Service Academies & College ROTC Showcase. I was glad to see many #MD05 students intent on pursuing an education & training to become a commissioned officer at one of our esteemed institutions. I wish them luck as they seek to serve our country in uniform.
Congratulations to Jenna Tran from Anne Arundel County on winning the 2026 #MD05 Congressional Art Competition! Her piece "A Dream" conveys how our youth's imagination is fascinating & powerful. I applaud her artistic technique & creativity & I look forward to viewing her art in the Capitol complex.
Great to join Governor Wes Moore at District Heights Elementary School to learn more about how CSRAP has made a real difference in students' and their families' lives. As a longtime advocate for early-childhood education, I'll keep working to support the well-being and success of our students.
Enacting the HAVA was one of my proudest achievements, & I was glad to join a panel discussion at UMD on how secure voting systems help maintain Americans’ faith in our elections. I encourage our youth to find ways to get involved with election administration to support the future of our democracy.
Great to visit Charlotte Hall Veterans Home with Gov. Moore & witness the profound impact of our collective action to strengthen health care for veterans. Team Maryland remains committed to ensuring that Marylanders who bravely served our nation in uniform receive the quality of care they deserve.
Proud to announce that the Maryland Fifth District’s 45th Annual Service Academy & College ROTC Showcase will take place on Friday, May 8th. I encourage all #MD05 students, parents, and educators to come see what our prestigious service academies have to offer. RSVP: forms.office.com/g/rFCfMCbS2e
