⭐ The 2026 ICCS Summer School has started in style! Professor Steve Easterbrook gave a keynote titled Computing the Climate: The past and future of global climate modelling. A range of workshops followed, with a chance for delegates to get to know each other over drinks and nibbles.
😎 Our annual Summer School kicks off on 13 July at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences. Attendees will enjoy a mix of keynote seminars, panel sessions, workshops, collaborations and social events. If you missed out on a place this time, don’t worry - we’ll share recordings on our YouTube channel.
🌿 It was great to meet so many people at last week's Climate and Nature Research Showcase, organised by @cambridgezero.bsky.social. It's really useful to chat and spread the word about ICCS. Training and resources were two things that lots of people wanted to talk about – what are your thoughts?
👜 The ICCS team is gearing up for the Durham HPC Days in the week of 15 June! Several of our RSEs are involved with sessions next week. There will be time to network, learn, and enjoy the beautiful city of Durham, so please come along and say hi to us! hpc-days.github.io/Durham-HPC-D...
👋 Last week we were delighted to host a Climate Science Grant Writing Workshop for early-career researchers and PhD students from the University of Cambridge and the British Antarctic Survey.
🌊 Don't miss David Kamm's talk about Bridging scales in ocean models: on data-driven parameterizations of mesoscale eddies. When: TODAY, 4:00pm to 5:00pm Where: Online or at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences Details: iccs.cam.ac.uk/events/iccs-...
🌀 Are you at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly #EGU2026 in Vienna this week? Watch out for ICCS! Here, Jack Atkinson shows off his poster about TCTrack. He's also the convenor of Session ITS1.7/CL0.3, Advancing Earth System Models using Machine Learning.
Principal RSE Jack Atkinson delivered an internal talk on NetCDF – the file format used to store most climate datasets. He gave the ICCS team an understanding of the fundamentals of the data they work with, and introduced the CF Metadata conventions for making climate data more FAIR.
🌦️ On Tuesday 21 April from 3pm-4pm UK time, Pritthijit Nath will give a seminar titled Rethinking Weather and Climate Model Parametrisations with Reinforcement Learning. Everyone is welcome to join us online! Full details: iccs.cam.ac.uk/events/iccs-...
🧊 How warm is your office today? Our Senior Research Associate Anna Allen is installing weather stations in Svalbard. Her work includes designing bespoke forecasting systems for low-resource areas. Anna found polar bear tracks next to where she put up one of the weather stations... 🐾
📢 “Better Code for Better Climate Science” We’re delighted that ICCS’s work is highlighted in the 2025 Schmidt Sciences impact report. ICCS is part of the Virtual Institute for Scientific Software, enabling software engineers to support climate scientists: www.schmidtsciences.org/profile-2025...
