Do not use Minneapolis organizers as the peaceful good example so you can smear the Prairieland defendants for their “violent” tactics. Alex Pretti was also armed. The MN 15 are being indicted for related tactics and strategy. So much is wrong with this piece, but that especially sticks in my craw.

Morning walk. There aren’t many flowers left in South Mpls after the flash drought and hot days of the last three weeks. Almost every plant is drooping and heat stressed. Our little bee balm field shed its bloom, the lilies all died. It was so sudden too after months of daily rain.

Heading: What Is a “Contested Issue”?

Body text: The proposed Standards circulated by Dean Bueno de Mesquita mandate that Lab faculty must follow a standard of viewpoint neutrality with respect to any “contested issue” that represents “topics about which reasonable, informed people disagree in contemporary public debate.” Faculty at Lab must now “engage contested issues in instructional settings only when pedagogically justified.” Conversely, any viewpoint to which instructors give preferential weight must represent one of the “widely settled historical judgments” that enjoy a “deep convergence across scholarship, law, and democratic practice.”

While framed as a move toward closer “alignment” between Lab and University as a whole, this new “contested issues” standard is alien to both research and teaching practices across UChicago’s other units. More fundamentally, it should be anathema to the most basic operations of an academic institution at any level.

Minneapolis turned out today. The epic puppets — snow plow, loon, whistles, etc — were so impressive. But my heart was with the jingle dancers who performed extra formidably this year. All that anger at having their family and community members stolen, channeled into movement and sound.

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has seen a surge in branch campuses of Western universities since the early 2000s. A notable pioneer is Qatar’s Education City Qatar Education Hub , a 12-square-kilometer hub launched by Qatar Foundation that hosts six U.S. university branch campuses (including Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown, Northwestern, Texas A&M, and Cornell’s medical college) alongside European institutions.

These ventures were encouraged by Gulf nations seeking world-class education at home.

I missed this a few weeks ago but grateful to revisit it today. We do have an opening to encourage opposition to deportation and borders per se, I think. While the kidnappings, detentions, and deportations are spectacles rather than hidden away in administrative bureaucracy.

Columbia appears to be negotiating to comply with the absurd demands made by the federal government. In particular, Columbia admin agreeing to put the MESAAS department under receivership, but under a "more agreeable" name so they can present it in a positive light.
