Just watched Ep 8: When America Flooded. Usual flaws and laughably inaccurate dire wolves aside, this was decent. The megafauna extinction only really came into play in the latter half, but what it did get was surprisingly somber. Arguably the bleakest episode of all. A solid end to an okay series.

Finally got to Ep 7: When The Continents Collided. I actually really enjoyed this one. While the plot armor for the twin Cuvieronius calfs got pretty ridiculous, the herd's overall story was still super investing. It also actually did a good job representing the GABI. (1/2)

Very late, but I just watched Ep 6: When The Oceans Shrank. NGL this is the weakest one so far. The extinction was treated like an afterthought story-wise and it had the most laughable end PSA. On the plus side, the visuals were amazing and the Sacabambaspis were adorable. 5/10

If I had a nickel for every time a veteran comic artist that worked on the original Ninja Turtles later went on to create their own naturalistic dinosaur comic, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's awesome it happened twice.

Now finished Ep 5: When The Forests Collapsed. Some of the show's best visuals, animal reconstructions, and storylines offset by some egregious narration and misinformation (i.e. higher O2 levels leading to giant bugs + calling Dimetrodon a reptile.) A mixed bag, though still mainly good. 7.5-8/10

UPDATE: I’m still alive! Super-Typhoon Bavi has now passed over us here and I survived. A bit shaken up and overheated, but my family and I are still in one piece. And hey, at least we have a generator to power some of the house this time. Hopefully things will go back to normal soon.

Okay, onto Ep 4: When The Seas Died! Hands down, the best so far. Top-tier storytelling that strongly evokes Walking With, following the lives of multiple animals in a gripping and emotional yet believable way. Boasts some of the show's best scenes and animal designs yet. 9/10

It's funny how this 1970 painting by Zdenek Burian is one of the most memed depictions of T.rex in pop culture, despite it actually being a reconstruction of Tarbosaurus. I've seen this on everything from T-shirts to webcomics, and I just find that fact kind of ironic but fun.

A cephalopod kaiju inspired by the ammonite from the 1961 adaptation of Mysterious Island. I actually made this years ago, but only just dug it up and colored it. Figured I'd post it since Ray Harryhausen's birthday was just a couple days ago. Happy B-day, Ray!

I also really enjoyed the final segment set in the Paleocene. This epoch gets so little attention, so I'm genuinely happy to see it finally get some focus in a major paleodoc (though the narrator calling Kosmodraco a crocodile was BS.) Anyway, I give this episode a 6.5/10. (4/4)

That said, the impact winter was fittingly bleak and it was impossible not to feel very sorry for the Nanuqsaurus. Really reminded me of WWD's Death of A Dynasty. (Even if I feel the Hell Creek or Udurchukan Formation should've been used instead of the older Prince Creek.) (3/4)

The portrayal of the day of impact felt too underplayed. Given what we know about this event, I highly doubt even dinosaurs in the Arctic would've been left entirely unscathed on that first day. They would've still been hit hard like their relatives elsewhere. (2/4)

Just saw Ep 3: When The Asteroid Fell. This was the one I was most anxious about, given my fixation on the K-Pg extinction. While decent overall, this is my least favorite so far. I like its idea of focusing on polar dinosaurs, but the execution was a very mixed bag. (1/4)

So yeah, quite a random story, but needless to say an interesting one. Kinda makes me want more stories about Godzilla and/or other kaiju set in the deep past in general, not just during the Mesozoic. Also the cover art by Bob Eggleton is immaculate. (4/4)

Their battle gets cut short by the Chicxulub asteroid hitting Earth. The Invader gets killed by the blast wave while Godzilla falls into a crevice, winding up back in the present. The issue, and series itself, end with that "It was just a dream. Or was it?!" cliche. (3/4)

Then it took an inexplicable turn when some random dragon-like alien kaiju comes to Earth to prey on dinosaurs and immediately starts throwing hands with Goji. It looks like a bizarro evolutionary transition between Bagan and Destoroyah. (2/4)

Just randomly remembered how weird the last issue of Dark Horse's 90s Godzilla comic was. It had Godzilla getting caught in an undersea earthquake and somehow traveling back to the Late Cretaceous. On arrival, he scares a herd of Alamosaurus and lashes two ornery T.rexes. (1/4)

A bit late, but I just watched Ep 2: When The Climate Broke. Very clear improvement in the overall storytelling. Gorgeous cinematography and designs for the featured taxa. Also grateful it didn't push the idea of early dinosaurs outcompeting other reptiles like WWD did. 8.5/10

Very ironic of them to take pot shots at other indie cartoons for making references while making their show's teaser a shoddy reference to a classic Tex Avery cartoon. And using copying other adult cartoons as a selling point on Kickstarter. Major "the call is coming from inside the house" energy.
