Summary
He’d met his best friend in elementary school, both super fans of the Star Wars franchise because of how utterly cool it was.

So, making a giant paper star was kind of an extension of that. Something to connect them to the vast intricacies of outer space.

He and MJ used to—wait. He shook his head.

“That can’t be right,” he whispered, scrunching his eyebrows together. “MJ doesn’t like Star Wars like that.”

A parol was supposed to symbolize hope and light in the darkness, like his lola told him. But now in the box with it unplugged and the streets outside looking rather bleak on a winter night, it looks like a dimmed out star instead.

He glanced at one of his most prized possessions that sat displayed atop the coffee table: a LEGO Death Star. Over three thousand pieces and worth hundreds of dollars, a piece that he had won by winning a robotics competition with his best friend, who built it with him.

A clever trick, for Byleth knew that a blue rose was impossible to attain in nature. She was not so naïve as to think that a blue as royal and vibrant as this was not artificial. In fact, she had orchestrated the gesture herself. Even obscured by the sweet scent of a rose, there was no mistaking the pungent, earthy smell of indigo dye extracted from woad sucked through the flower’s stem. Woad, a flowering plant that oft sprouted from impractical, disrupted soil.

An impossible rose—a mystery, a wish to have the impossible. The stench of dyer’s woad—enduring persistence.

A language that only she and Dimitri seemed to understand, transferred through the words only flowers could speak when the world asked them to hide.

Her fingers were calloused and her wrist sore. The tightening sensation had increased as the weeks went on. She had this problem for as long as she could remember—or at least as long as she was training to be a hunter. After all, she used her left hand to play guitar. But since last year, the problem had gotten worse.

Mira had claimed it was carpal tunnel, and Zoey had even brought her back to Healer Han the other day. Rumi drank his grape-flavored potion, but nothing seemed to work.

“It’s been paining you for years, am I right, Rumi-nim?” Healer Han asked in a follow-up call. “Perhaps it is because you’ve brushed sleeves with someone with whom you’ve had a past connection. It is possible that the connection is so strong that it now manifests itself through the ache in your wrist.”

Every word was biting, a harsh reminder that Sylvain could no longer fathom the chasm that Felix had created between himself and the rest of the Blue Lions. “The Professor is strong, far stronger than the boar. I can see it. If anyone can train me, it’s her. I’m sure of it.”

But the more the cracks widened, the more Sylvain saw that this rift may have separated his friend from the others, but now the ghosts of his past clung to Felix tighter. Their invisible hands clawed at his throat, choking.

“Besides,” Felix continued, “I won’t be leaving you behind.” He locked eyes with Sylvain, and something he could not see consumed the space between them.

More than three months had passed since then, and still she remembered the boy from their school days, the boy who blushed when no one was looking, who smiled at her without knowing he had done it—the boy who drank tea when he could not sleep.

She was wearing a pair of cream-colored sweats and a hoodie that matched, her purple hair braided neatly behind her, the end of the tail swinging. In the bright stage light, the patterns on her skin sparkled, iridescent with life.
“You were great, Jinu,” Rumi said.
And truly, that was all that mattered.

When Felix turned seventeen earlier in the year, his father had presented him with the ring. “It’s an heirloom,” Rodrigue had said. “Now that you are to enter the Officers Academy, it is time that you wear it.”

At first, Felix refused. He never liked what the ring represented. Its shiny silver surface, engraved with the Crest of Fraldarius, was tarnished with the ancient, misguided belief in a knight’s honor and chivalry. Of a good death. To die for one’s liege.

Pathetic.

But then his father placed his hands on Felix’s shoulders, his eyes unreadable, unsearchable. “You don’t have to accept this ring until you feel ready. But I know that one day, when you discover what you believe in, you will be more than worthy to wear it.”

The Duscurian representatives stood waiting in the village square, but their faces were not the welcoming ones Felix had expected. They narrowed their eyes at the Relic on the king’s back.

Tall, sharp-eyed figures, garbed in drab brown, weathered robes, stood stiffly in place, as though they had waited there for days. The elderly man who stepped forward to greet them had a tight smile that didn’t reach his eyes. He wore a golden fan-shaped earring that reminded him of Dedue’s. But the gold was dull, uncared for, and unpolished.

"Your Majesty," the man said, his voice proper. "We have been expecting you." He bowed low toward King Lambert, though his back was already hunched over with age. He looked like a twisted tree being forced to bend lower in the harsh winds of a storm.

The other Duscurian representative, a tall, willowy woman with pale eyes and a chain of gold around her neck, smiled too. "The village is prepared for your stay. You must be tired from the journey. Allow us to escort you to your accommodations."

And then it was as if a string had snapped.

Perhaps it was the sheer force of desperation that drove Felix to observe her interactions with Rufus more than he intended. It was a concrete thing he could latch onto.

Cornelia was always poised, always careful, but in certain moments, there was a peculiar subtlety in her actions that Felix couldn’t ignore. He noticed how she leaned in just a little closer to Rufus, the proximity between them growing more pronounced with each passing day. A glance here, a soft touch there, her fingers skimming the sewn embroidery along his shoulder. Her body language was telling him things, things she never dared to say aloud, but which spoke volumes nonetheless.

She was using Rufus's attraction to her as a tool.

He had braced for overt strikes, for chaos and bloodshed. Instead, she had wrapped her schemes in silk and patience, letting others move where she did not have to.

He wanted to slap himself for his idiocy. Of course, Cornelia would only move in the shadows. He had been so focused on the version of her that had accused Dimitri of regicide, on the version of her that cackled and spat at him and the other Blue Lions as they fought to retake Fhirdiad, that he had forgotten that there was a time she was subtle.

Felix could chalk it up to youth, too. Back then, when Cornelia was prominent in the capital, he was a thirteen-year-old brat whose only worry was swordsmanship and impressing his older brother.

A child would pay no attention to the machinations of the court. He had minimal memory of anything related to the court in the first place. Sylvain would have teased him for it, much to his chagrin. Felix never liked politics from the day he was born, and now his disdain for them was costing him.

But he was no child now, and he scolded himself for his blindness. He should have seen the signs.

Felix’s shoulders tensed out of habit before he relaxed, recognizing the soft footfalls. Queen Patricia stepped inside, clearly just as surprised as he was. She was holding her own oil lamp, the light from it brightening her face. She paused, one hand still on the doorframe, her expression caught somewhere between relief and mild embarrassment.

“Ah, Glenn. You’re here.”

Felix rose immediately. “It’s late...”

“I could say the same to you,” the queen said as she set down her bergamot tea and lamp on the edge of the nearest table.

The corner of Felix’s lips turned downward. “Tea that dark will keep you awake.”

“On the contrary, it will help me sleep.”

“Stay sharp,” Felix said to the group as they hiked through the thick underbrush, the trees casting long, distorted shadows in the mist. “Don’t drop your guard. The wilds are more dangerous than you think. We’re not just training for some sparring match.”

Dimitri, of course, had an eager look on his face. The kind of look that always made Felix hesitate, wondering just how much he could push him without steering him into becoming that wrathful, vengeful man who sought death during the war. But that was the way Dimitri always was—eager to prove himself, too eager sometimes. It was a trait that Felix both admired and loathed.

"We’ll face something out here, I know it," Dimitri said, his eager tone tempered by the serious atmosphere. “There’s always something out in the wild.”

Felix shot him a glance. “You’re not here for fun and games, Your Highness,” he said, biting back the nickname he wanted to call him and channeling the words the real Glenn would say. “You’re here to learn. How to think under pressure, how to stay calm when everything goes wrong.”

He curled his lip in reaction to his father’s doubt. “I know what I’m asking.”

“And who are you to make that decision? Son, you must know your position. You may be a Fraldarius, but you do not yet have the experience of one. You’re a young knight, and you haven’t yet been on any real missions.”

Felix growled. A light drizzle pitter-pattered around his feet where he stood under the awning in the marketplace. The thought of the future echoed in his head like a bell that wouldn’t stop ringing.

He couldn’t stop here.

“Trust me,” Felix said finally. He took a deep breath and looked his father in the eye. “I’m just asking you to talk to him, and if Jeralt Eisner is up to snuff, recommend him to the king.”

He wove through the outer edge of the crowd and saw men emerging from the road. It was a guarded caravan flanked by armored figures in light, mobile plate. Their formation was loose but controlled, the pattern familiar to any trained fighter who’d watched them work…mercenaries.

At their head was a man whose presence cut through the chaos like a clean blade through fog. A man Felix had not expected to ever see again.

“Diplomatic mission?” Felix asked. Then, clearing his throat, he added, “…sire?”

Lambert smiled as if amused. In a more serious tone, he replied. “Ah, forgive me. I had forgotten that you were not at the meeting, Glenn. I see your father and think that you must be his shadow, and I forget that this is not always the case.

“It’s a goodwill visit,” he continued. “Duscur’s council has offered a reaffirmation of peace. A formal gesture. Our advisors consider it an opportunity to normalize relations. I consider it an opportunity to finally work well with our esteemed neighbors. After all, I have worked my entire reign for this. The citizens of Duscur deserve to know once and for all that the people of Faerghus are their staunch allies. Enough of this prejudice. Each country has its own gods and customs, so why can we not live in harmony?”

Felix did not have a comment to add to that. He glanced over at Dimitri, who looked to be paying rapt attention.

“I’m finalizing the escort. I want you on Dimitri’s guard detail for the entire journey. Front of the formation,” the king commanded.

Being Glenn for the last few days had made him attract attention. Mostly, it was the rapt attention of the younger versions of his friends.

It made him sick.

He was the older kid now, or at least the older brother, but whenever Dimitri got the chance, he rambled on about his day and his worries when Felix would normally hardly bother to offer an ear. His younger self, too, right before Rodrigue had whisked him back off to Fraldarius territory, constantly asked for validation.

And Ingrid? Well, she was the only sane one, if he was being honest, and that thought surprised him. But he remembered with a sharp pang in his heart that his brother was supposed to be engaged to her.

What a messed up situation this was.
