Few situations feel as stressful as having a loved one in an intense medical situation. A sense of powerlessness looms over the whole ordeal. You want to be helpful, but it's not like you can do the operation yourself, as we all learned from the famous anti-sexism riddle. Also, most of us are not doctors. If I tried to operate on my son (hypothetical) I would end up in the same place I am now (no son).

The grace you show in the face of the angriest possible opposition borders on saintly. Every time it rains out, your job goes from maintaining orderly lines to communicating with hundreds of furious strangers being held hostage by a god they've just that moment stopped believing in. Even when you're authorized to help them out, it's unclear who will accept a $12 meal voucher with gratitude and who will erupt with rage like a geyser in a polo shirt because, in fairness, $12 at an airport gets you a ketchup packet full of Dasani or four Peanut M&Ms.

Maybe this is a married-guy thing of me to say though, but if you are tired the dull buffet provided by dating apps, every single person on your phone screen exists not on your phone screen as well. And lots of other people too. Hinge and Bumble don't conjure those folks into existence. It's not like Pokemon Go. Everyone you could possibly make out with exists tangibly in three dimensions at all times.

"We can do hard things," goes the mantra popularized by Glennon Doyle, Amanda Doyle, and Abby Wambach. I think that's kind of a nice thing to keep in mind when we are up against life's big challenges. People are resilient. We have the capacity to grow and change. We are often surrounded by more love and care than we realize. With all that being true, we do not have to hard-thing-ify every annoyance in our lives. Sitting on hold waiting to talk to a human customer service representative from your airline of choice is a pain in the ass, but it's not difficult, if you have the space to get other things done while your phone pumps out music so anodyne it might as well be the sound of leaves fluttering in a breeze.
