What do a happiness expert and a security one have in common? After 3 decades of friendship, it turns out we both find meaning in the movie JAWS. Gretchen Rubin responds to EARLY WARNING in her FIVE THINGS newsletter, happily. Read my essay: earlywarningwithjuliette.substack.com?utm_campaign...
“You knew. . . But still my boy is dead.” In honor of Shark Week, I discuss this iconic scene in JAWS and defend Mayor Vaughn. Read “There Are Sharks in the Water” in Early Warning: earlywarningwithjuliette.substack.com/p/there-are-...
Shark Week has begun. Tomorrow’s newsletter is about what Jaws gets right—and very wrong—about danger. Mayor Vaughn actually had a point. Subscribe earlywarningwithjuliette.substack.com

“Foreigners may not like America right now but they seem to really like Americans.” @cnn Sign up for my newsletter Early Warning with Juliette Kayyem. I write about what today’s news means and what it might tell us about what’s coming tomorrow. earlywarningwithjuliette.substack.com/p/welcome-to...
I joined @pbsnews.org Newshour on Friday to talk about the presidential security and the politics of assassination. Full episode: www.pbs.org/newshour/sho...
“It (FIFA choosing US, Canada and Mexico) was a vision of a North America that you can’t even get your head around now. It was a vision that the three countries, as allies, with cross-border collaboration, would host as a unified front.” I spoke to @npr.org about geopolitics, safety and sports.
“We can’t try to isolate every tragedy and say its another state, or race, or socioeconomic status. These are all American tragedies.” @cnn
“The US thinks this is going to be won in the air but the Iranians know it will be won in the waters (Strait of Hormuz).” Two weeks ago, I joined @talkingfeds.bsky.social to state what was already obvious to all but the WH. Thinking of our service members tonight.
April is Arab American Appreciation month. I am proud of my family’ journey, and that of my children raised in the Jewish faith. My work lets me use my voice, regardless of party in WH, to remind us there are people — Palestinians, Lebanese, Iranians and Israelis — all impacted by war and terror.
“Hours away from deployment, and we still do not have a lot of details about rules of engagement.” I joined @cnn.com on ICE working at airports.
At three key moments in America’s modern history, Mueller served: Vietnam, 9/11 and Russian interference in the 2016 election. @cnn.com
“The head of counterterrorism… was outside the room. I have no doubt that is true. Everybody was kept out of the room.” @cnn.com
Me and the Red Carpet! Well I was asked about security at the Oscars and this is as close as I will get. Plus I got to mention the Will Smith slap! I rarely get to smile on air. Give me my moment. @cnn.com
Earlier this week, I wrote about the rise of Islamic terrorism in the US from radicalized men and Iran state sponsors. The Trump Admin, oddly, hasn’t acknowledged this. My explanation why for @theatlantic.com www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
“I think we are deluding ourselves if we think this is a regional war. It is a regional war with global consequences.” I spoke about terrorism and #Iran for @pbsnews.org Newshour.
Again and again, I repeat. For all the war hawks or idealogues talking about a transformative moment, let me make this clear: the Gulf states will soon teach the US that they love their commerce more than they hate Iran.
“I think it’s a little precious Secretary Noem, who has not talked a lot about terrorism … about climate disasters …about cybersecurity now is using those issues to defend DHS ….when it is her horrible and chaotic immigration procedures” that are responsible for the shutdown. @cnn.com
Trump’s immigration policy is a foreign policy one. The world doesn’t want to visit. CNN International follows this as much as domestic with a keen focus on what it means for international visitors. @cnn.com
I am in Milan. It’s work. I help with safety planning for big events. My take from in the room. VP Vance was heckled by the crowd when he appeared on screen. But I want to point out that the same crowd was loud and supportive when Team USA came out. It was lovely to hear. And quite a juxtaposition.
Tonight at 6pm. Details to watch this discussion about immigration here iop.harvard.edu/events/ice-a...
“We’ll see if these changes in personnel (at ICE) are more than just window dressing….the mission remains the same.” @cnn.com
“This isn’t policing. This isn’t law enforcement. This is thuggery. And I think the posture of ICE right now is that criticism (of them) is somehow a license to shoot.” @cnn.com
“I’ll be honest with you. She (Noem) is not sophisticated. She is running an agency that is at best out of control.” @cnn.com
"I think the president was exceptionally confusing. It was completely unclear (from the WH) what was the imminent threat and what is the plan on Sunday. The hodgepodge of explanations is confusing and shows Trump never made a case to the public." @cnn.com #Venezuela
“If there is an alternative explanation to war, the White House isn’t providing it.” I spoke to @cnn.com about extrajudicial killings, a Navy buildup and Trump’s denials.
“I want to know who you work with?” Morning humor but the Louvre heist is no laughing matter and I’m not optimistic given the nature of jewels vs paintings. @cnn.com @audiecornish.bsky.social
