For GN, LUNAR BOY, by Jes and Cim Wibowo, is a fantastic read. I love the SciFi world they created, rooted in Indonesian culture. I love seeing examples of loving blended families, supported queer characters, and stories of belonging. And the art is absolutely stunning.
For MG, my 12yo and I were both deeply moved by THE TROUBLE WITH HEROES, by Kate Messner. If there are any tween boys in your life with a lot of anger in them— esp if they’ve experienced loss— I think this book is a necessary and healing read.
Given ICE agent David Bruillette’s history of domestic violence, this comic feels especially timely.
His ex-wife is apparently the one who identified him to press. Kudos to Ashley.
His name is David Brouilette. He’s the ICE agent who murdered Joan Sebastian Guerrero, shooting into his car while his 3yo daughter was in the backseat in her Bluey pajamas. Make him famous. Let him find no peace. #FuckICE #FuckFascism
This trend of White Supremacy Barbies who think they look younger than they do is pathetic. They’ve spent their ENTIRE lives focused on being pretty to white men. So when their looks begin to fade, they’ve got nothing left but their shitty, hateful personalities. No amount of filler can fix that.
I’m 3 years older, and I don’t look like I’ve been pickled in a cocktail of white supremacy and formaldehyde.
Things are rough, but not hopeless. Keep fighting. Keep shinning. And never, ever give up. #Resist #FuckICE #FuckTrump #NoKings
Happy #KidLitArtPostcard day! I’m a queer, fat #KidLit author and illustrator, open to illustration projects from picture books to graphic novels. I love drawing stuff for kids that’s quirky, cute, and sweetly subversive. www.authorkellymangan.com/portfolio
Easy Rider (esp the ending), or the original Stepford Wives.
A did a more streamlined version for my Threadless shop. In case anybody is interested: heartnsnark.threadless.com/designs/we-w...
Speech is not terrorism. Protest is not terrorism. Civil disobedience is not terrorism. Books (and zines) are not terrorism. Poetry is not terrorism. Art is not terrorism. Be loud now, while you still can. Refuse to be silenced.
Playing again with watercolor pencils. I dunno, I guess you could call these hair studies.

I am torn. I kinda like it like this. But I’m also very tempted to color it. What do you think?
Activists in MN are now being arrested and charged with terrorism by the federal government for being involved in an anti-ICE, neighborhood defense group. Never, ever talk to cops. They are not your friends.
Every time I see somebody say that, I think, how pathetic it is to be a fan of something your whole life, but never actually get it.
Dang it! I forgot about #KidLitArtPostcard yesterday! 😭 I'm still here! I still draw sketchy, quirky stuff, and sometimes I even get paid to! www.authorkellymangan.com/portfolio Available for #KidLit PB, GN, and coverwork. Rep: @tajmccoy.bsky.social
Happy Pride Month! Support queer kids and families. Read queer books. Speak up for queer people in your public AND private life. #kidlit #lgbtqiakids
Historically, hungerstrike is a tool of last resort, when people have literally nothing else to fight back with but their own lives & bodies. That should tell you something about the desperate conditions inside Dilley (& other ICE concentration camps), that hundreds of people are doing this.
Some people think it's frivolous or indulgent to make art in times of fear, tragedy, & great suffering. But those are the times it's needed most. Some small, beautiful thing could be what keeps a person going when the world is closing in around them. It takes courage to sing into the darkness.
I nominate Maggie Tokuda-Hall to be the next National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. Let’s have somebody in that role who not only loves & appreciates modern #KidLit, but who’s fought tirelessly against book bans & soft censorship (sometimes at great personal & professional cost).
Good morning to everyone who isn’t a fascist. And good morning most especially to the old folks who got arrested this week for sitting in at our local ICE offices. Now THAT’s how you Boomer. ✌️
This wonderful picture book, by Stephanie Lucianovic & George Ermos, is structured as a how-to manual for pet funerals. It’s a sweet, sad, and— at times— even humorous book for kids about death. It lets allows them the space to feel however they feel, & reassures them there’s no wrong way to mourn.
