This one. I sat beneath it in a trattoria in Ferrara while on a research trip in 2009. I left the city, came back a while later and it was still there, so I asked the artist if I could buy it. One of the most impulsive things I’ve ever done, and she still gives me pleasure when I see her every day.

On the right there is a paver path with some drying bits of turf spilling over on to it. On the left, a bed with crushed seashells as mulch and some small plants. There is a two-part cage over a few plants that has not been pushed together, and inside the cage, standing triumphantly over a small plant, is a small tabby. Her nose is in the air - her face partially obscured by the cage, but you just know she looks simultaneously silly and smug.

One pointing down the side street says “senso unico” (one way). Beneath it is the street name, via Paradiso (paradise), with a blue “P” next to it, indicating that there is a parking lot further down the street.

I had a similar problem with the door knockers on the porta della vigna. Similar, but not quite the same. Someone in the visitation team had way too much time on their hands. #nuntastic

Listening to this while doing my own seemingly endless task. If this were not adequate proof of being alive, the pain of smashing my finger while breaking up the rubble certainly helps.

Still reeling from the news of the death oh Bonnie Blackburn, FBA. She was the kindest, smartest, most generous scholar I’ve ever known; she fought my corner from the time we first met 33 years ago; she made everything I’ve ever written about early modern music better. I cannot process our loss.
