This was how I found Mystery when she went missing a few years ago. I'd been calling her all day, but only at about 9pm did I hear the scratchy little meows coming back out of the darkness. She'd jumped to the roof of the shop below & got lost in the ductwork. Muddy but uninjured. Little minx.

Expansion was not itself a mistake. One of the genuine achievements of the late 2oth century was that subjects such as English, history and drama ceased to belong almost exclusively to a small social elite.
Some of the most intellectually ambitious teaching in British universities happened not in ancient institutions but in post-1992 universities. That is one of the reasons the present contraction feels so bleak. The danger isn't just the loss of particular departments. It is the quiet restratification of intellectual life.

I heard a crow absolutely losing his shit at dusk today, and rounded the corner to see it taunting a cat. Crow sitting on the fence, cat at the base lashing its tail. The cat would pounce at the crow and it would flap a few feet away, land back on the fence and keep cawing. This is my only photo:
