My reply became so long I decided to do it as screenshots with alt text instead of a thread!

That it's a complicated issue (I am on ESNZ Select Committee) and whilst you can argue to expand extraction on security grounds, and make some good points, I'm not convinced. Overriding position should be to keep the stuff in the ground. Need to look after the workers though.

Few points to consider: (not an exhaustive list)

V mature basin so expensive to extract BUT only real supply we could secure in case of large scale warfare (which is a realistic possibility).

We are not currently able to immediately stop using oil - electricity is relatively easy but lots of other things aren't, including heat and vital chemicals. And that leaves us vulnerable when we don't have our own supply.

We're highly likely to *need* to continue to use for the foreseeable future so there is an argument that importing simply shifts emissions without gain of domestic tax that could contribute to other good things.

The above points are most compelling when looking at further extraction.

However:

Trade is on international market, relatively little left in north sea and, unless we nationalise, it would have no impact on our prices (& there's cost to nationalisation).

We currently can't actually refine our own oil (though refineries are close by in the Netherlands and they're friendly and likely to stay that way).

Workers need a proper transition plan - we can't do to them what happened to the miners. But this doesn't necessarily mean they stay in the same (well paying) industry.

There is something to be said for making a problem for yourself in order to speed up the solutions that we will need to find soon anyway.

I'd also add that I don't think I know a single Labour MP who doesn't take climate change seriously. Whilst we might argue on details, we're the Government which has massively accelerated the transition, particularly on energy, and has taken significant steps to address other areas of climate crisis. We've taken real action as a government and engaged in the complexity and trade offs properly. I confess to getting a little frustrated when I see claims to the contrary.

And yet I'm still having to make speeches against climate change denial on the one hand and, on the other, persuade people that yes, we do need large scale energy projects, and we can't transition quickly or well with *just* small scale solar. We need to build stuff, and quickly!

Thanks to Hilary for this message. I'm furious at some I have seen (particularly on my FB) who are trying to minimise the seriousness of the violence, deny the racism, or engage in whataboutery. This was innocent people being terrorised because of their skin colour. (No audio I'm afraid, just subs)

The rest of the bed has been fallow for 2/3 years so I've just randomly planted some beans and peas so I get some pretty flowers and potentially some food. Not sure they'll get looked after! The greenhouse however is looking glorious.
