The party chooses peace

as they walk down the trench, an extremely elderly pinky walks past the Vagabonds headed in the other direction. he pays them no mind, and most intend to return the sentiment, but Music Box remembers all the tales he's heard about Big Pinky Punkerston, the legendary hero that fell into the trench and was never seen again; he attempts to get the man's autograph, but the pinky grouchily shoos him away. Music Box leaves, disillusioned

further on, the Vagabonds run into Melexigal, as they predicted. he is amenable to speak with them, and they learn that although he isn't particularly fond of living at the bottom of the ocean, he has no intention of leaving. the Trench Witch has chosen to make him an enemy, and he doesn't want to "surrender" by leaving. through careful diplomacy, the Vagabonds are able to convince him to move on by talking up the better world they found through a distant rift (the bathroom) and the better food that no doubt waits there (anything but fish). eventually Melexigal agrees to travel with the party temporarily, though he takes the time to summon his charmed minions (mosasaurs) and send them away from the trench so they don't eat his temporary lair-mate (the old pinky) now that he's gone

upon returning to the Trench Witch, she immediately senses that the Vagabonds have not sufficiently fulfilled their end of the bargain; the dragon is waiting just outside, and even if he does leave there's no guarantee that he will "never return". as such, she refuses to hold up her end of the bargain. the party attempts to renegotiate, but more hags emerge from the darkness of the lair and the atmosphere grows tense. the party also tries to ask her about the nearby rift, hidden by her mindbending magic maze, but she denies any knowledge and the party decides to leave

Session 27

An unfruitful visit to Deathreef leads to taking extreme measures

after Plume and Jamyxa get seen canoodling by the rest of the party and Plume gets sucked back into the halo by sheer force of embarrassment, the Vagabonds make their preparations to return to Deathreef. they keep their potions of necrotic resistance handy, and Croakette puts on the fume mask they were given by Pag Clan (though it quickly exhausts her). most usefully, Mora is out of the halo and able to use her innate ability to detect magic auras to guide the party around any areas of charm/death even as they appear underfoot

without having to fight for their lives every step, Deathreef ends up being rather dull, as the party simply doesn't know what exactly they should be looking for. however, after hours of wandering, they notice that the stray bones that litter the ground seem to be arranged into deliberate shapes. Music Box and Mora, putting their heads together, identify them as a side effect or "thumbprint" of powerful necromantic magic. Jamyxa also finds that the earth beneath the surface is clumped together in the shape of snake-like bones, which also seem to forms a second layer of symbols. all of this together is enough for Mora to recognize the magic involved as the work of a hag, who she refers to as a "sister". the party recalls that the Trench Witch of No One's Fault has been mentioned in conjunction with Deathreef before, and decide the best thing they have left to do is follow that lead in spite of Edward's warnings not to enter the trench

Music Box uses speak with dead to communicate with a largely unhelpful dead pinky who also happens to be a bad father

the party sails to the trench and climbs down the side, leaving their nervous crew behind. based on the map they have, it should be fairly easy to find another rift (which Edward had crossed out), but a baffling magic effects causes them to get lost and instead end up at a cave entrance; the Trench Witch's lair

Mora and Plume enter Jamyxa's mind in search of answers

aboard the ship, Mora explains to Jamyxa that once she is asleep, Mora can enter her dreams, make contact with her subconscious self, and together they can explore and hopefully find the source of her problem. Mora also says that she can bring one other person along, and Plume volunteers. Mora uses her sleep spell to knock both of them out quickly so they can get started

the initial gathering goes well enough, with Mora plucking Jamyxa and Plume out of fairly ordinary dreams. she then tells the pair that the best chance to find what they're looking for is to return to the memory of when it first started, immediately after they all got Scattered and ended up in Middle-Night, and that the way to navigate to specific memories is to hold on to the emotions felt in those moments (confusion, worry, etc). however, this proves difficult to do without practice, and both Jamyxa and Plume end battling against nightmares

Jamyxa dream a memory of being helpless on the ground while two indistinct figures attack her loved ones, amongst a raging inferno. she fights against the figures as they twist and grow, wielding strange dream energy as she does so. in the fighting Jamyxa's leg is torn clean off, which slows her down but doesn't do as much harm as might be expected. once Mora and Plume catch up with her, the nightmares are dispatched quickly

later, Plume dreams of struggling to stay afloat in a pond. over time the water manifests into a sort of amorphous creature actively trying to drag her down, which she fights against. Plume's nightmare proves slightly less dangerous overall than Jamyxa's, but she's still grateful when she and Mora arrive to help

Battle with Worm

a Pag Clan guide brings the Vagabonds to the lava fields beyond the merrow forges, where they must be careful to avoid burning undersea rivers and random vents. the guide points to a seemingly random location in one of the rivers; upon firing some weapons into the lava, a giant worm swims out and begins to attack! Jamyxa is able to easily sever its head, but a new head immediately forms from the stump and the worm wraps around her in an attempt to tear her apart with its many spines. the original head swims away and attacks the rest of the group, using powerful suction to attempt to draw them into the river of lava.

over the course of the fight, other sea creatures adapted to the lava vents are disturbed, and some join the fight. a group of giant hairy crabs attempt to hold Jamyxa down, a swarm of small carnivorous fish try to devour Croakette and Jeremy, and a pyroclastopus grabs Pallerson and holds him dangerously close to the lava (he wiggles free and jumps clear). the worm itself is eventually slain one body segment at a time through a combination of Jamyxa's melee attacks (empowered by Music Box and Pallerson) and precise shots from Osric and Croakette. the hapless guide is protected from taking any damage at all!

The city of Deep Forge and a glimpse of merrow politics

the Vagabonds enter Deep Forge from the northeast. there is no path, stair, or elevator to help walkers enter the city, so they scramble down the slope into the trench and start exploring the first area they reach: one of eight clusters of buildings centred around a single large tower or temple. Music Box gives a masterful performance, improvising a song to relate their experiences with Deathreef so far, in an attempt to draw attention and hopefully get some help. a crowd of merrow applauds the performance, and one in particular swims forward; Vesh Mog, apparently high ranking in his clan, invites the Vagabonds to stay as guests at Vesh House, believing that the party and the clan can help each other in some way

the party splits up, with Jamyxa, Osric, and Music Box attending dinner at Vesh House while Croakette and Darrel continue south to let Jeremy, Bill, and the rest of their ship's crew know what's happening

at Vesh House, the Vagabonds enjoy abundant crab legs and massive chewy steaks apparently made from giant worms. Jamyxa just barely finishes a steak, while Osric is barely able to make a dent in his. Vesh Mog says that his clan has the best alchemists and healers in Deep Forge, and offers both services with (at this time) no mention of payment. in particular he offers to try to determine the nature of Jamyxa's mysterious affliction

at the boat, Darrel and Croakette find Jeremy and some of the crew speaking with another merrow, who introduces herself as Tuer Liha, the trademisress of Deep Forge. she is interested in hiring the party's ship long term to help establish formal trade between Deep Forge and the Hidden Fortress. she also says that the party's ship is welcome to dock above the city

Session 24

Jamyxa needs help!

the Vagabonds follows Jamyxa as she runs into Deathreef, seeking something that even in her altered mental state she can't fully identify. Darrel uses his barn magic to speed Osric and Croakette up to keep pace. eventually Jamyxa senses that she has entered one of the mysterious rings of magic compulsion, and although she resists the mind control, she nonetheless feels that she is in the right spot and remains in the zone of death. Croakette however fails to resist, and finds herself unable to leave an around roughly 30 feet in diameter. both of them feel their life force being drained rapidly

in her frustration, Jamyxa starts attempting to dig down through the coral and fish bones in search of anything she can identify as the source of her craving, but doing so seems to anger Deathreef in some way. a number of ghostly fish rise from the ground and begin to attack, putting even those outside the ring of death in danger of having their life drained

Plume, magically enlarged by Music Box, enters the ring and begins lifting her friends out of it, which seems to break the compulsion. Osric finds that his gravity blaster is highly effective against the ghosts, as are the magical blasts of Plume's homunculus, though the rest of the party's weapons also work. Croakette uses one of Darrel's ropes to lasso Plume once everyone else is safe, and everyone works together to pull her to safety. Jamyxa passes out as her rage wears off, and Plume and Doreen carry everyone quickly away from Deathreef, and the group makes their way to the town of Ezlo Ridge in the middle of the night

Exploring three new, deadly locales

on the way back to Palisade, Jamyxa suddenly remembers they forgot to hold Alba to her promise to see their ship repaired. the rear mast picks this exact moment to finally snap the rest of the way in half after being hit with a cannonball back when they first captured it. fortunately the ship can still said with only two masts, just not as fast. the party and crew drag the broken mast behind them as they return to the city

Queen Majerie of Palisade awards the Vagabonds with a gold-plated card that can be used to receive a 50% discount on any three purchases made within Palisade. Croakette immediately grabs it and runs off, but is actually hiding in plain sight as a prank. Osric steals the card back and the Vagabonds start to consider what they should buy. the first priority is a replacement mast made from steel-reinforced molded shell

the whole party agrees to head for Firewell next, as Jamyxa feels a mysterious urge to explore the nearby Deathreef, and everyone is curious about the rift that Edward marked on their map near there. they leave their ship and crew outside the steep trench of Firewell and briefly walk through the merrow city of Deep Forge, which is not exactly welcoming, but not hostile either. as they make their way through the forge fields (where merrow use volcanic vents to smelt steel), one of the workers chases them down and warns them that if they go further, into the unimproved vents, they may not return alive. the Vagabonds accept the warning but press on

pushing through the deadly hear of the vents (Jeremy escorts Kenny the shark back to the ship after he swoons), the party finds the next rift...

An attempt at peace negotiations

the Palisade forces approach the Hidden Fortress through the storm. Alba speaks through the howling winds, giving permission for the leader of the forces (Captain Goralg) to enter the Fortress to parley, with the "outsiders" as an honour guard.

Goralg and the Vagabonds are escorted to a drinking hall which has been repurposed into a conference room. Alba and Edra speak for the Hidden Fortress, while more druids and several pirates act as security. the opposing desires of Alba and Palisade immediately become apparent: Alba wants autonomy to serve justice to loyalists of the Emperor and to dispose with the pirates' stolen hoard, while Palisade wants all pirates to submit to their own justice system and to redistribute the hoard as much as possible to those who it was taken from. Alba offers the return of all remaining captives and an end to hostilities, but this doesn't satisfy the mission that Goralg was given by Queen Majerie
