So happy to say my last #FandomMarket item has arrived! Look at these fabulous fic bindings from @bookknobs.bsky.social, who did both In Name Only and Working with the Wrong Tags and for me. 💜🥹

#WIPWednesday for Into the Heart of the Forest, my RBB with @gelatinousstand.bsky.social, coming on July 1. Stede is still checking out that haunted house situation.

Stede sighed and stood, walking to the door in the glass wall and pushing it open. It moved silently, the hinge working smoothly, and he stepped out onto the deck and walked to the railing. There were more ambient noises with the door open. Stede hoped he would grow able to identify them all with time.

He let his eyes trail over the pool, past the pool house out to that path into the woods. The lights from the patio didn't quite reach there, and the spot was black on black, a void at the entrance into the forest.

Or not quite black on black. Stede could sense movement, a presence, human he thought, human height at least. Surely, deer didn’t get that big, and he didn’t think the area still had bears. Perhaps Pete had walked out that direction for some reason.

Low laughter echoed over the water of the pool, and Stede wrenched his eyes away, finding Lucius and Pete at the edge of the patio talking in soft voices. He jerked his eyes back to the spot, the dark on dark, but there was nothing there at all. He must have imagined it.

John raised an eyebrow. “Wondered how long it would take you.”

“What did Maggie do this time?” Stede asked in an excited whisper.

“It’s not Maggie,” Frenchie said solemnly. “Missing anyone?”

“What?” Stede spun to check over his shoulder and make sure Ed was still in the booth behind him. “No!”

Frenchie sighed and shook his head. “No, not him.”

It took Stede a few seconds to remember that he hadn’t seen Lucius in a bit. “Lucius? What could he possibly be up to?”

Frenchie warned, “Just saying you may want to stay out of the hallway for the next few minutes. You know, plausible deniability, if the event staff asks.”

Stede gasped, followed by, “No. He wouldn’t! We barely got out of it last time.”

“Kinda his anniversary,” said John. “I think it’s sweet.”

“No, I’m not, which is why you should take it seriously, or…You’re not, are you?” Mary took a long sip of her tea, her eyes thoughtful. “If you’re going to go anyway, at least promise me you’ll leave if…if it’s wrong. Don’t stay. You know there’s always that bit, in the movie, when the people say, ‘Oh, we have to stay! We invested our entire life’s savings into this haunted dump!’ Just get out, okay? Doug won’t mind if you move into the guest room.”

“Oh, I’m sure he wouldn’t,” Stede said dryly. “It’s not like I need a place to stay. I need a purpose, and this promises to be interesting, whatever else is happening.” Stede considered, but didn’t want to actually agree that he would abandon the house if it happened to be creepy. What even counted as creepy? He would hate for the house to be fascinating and then feel obligated to leave it because he’d assured his worrying his ex-wife that he would. “I promise not to stay because I invested my entire life’s savings into a haunted dump.”

“You know that isn’t what I asked for.”

“I know,” Stede said, leaning back into his chair. “I just…I think I’m ready for an adventure. I’ll take Lucius. He’s like a skittish colt. If anyone would drag me out of a haunted house for my own good, it’s him. Better?”

“Oh, Ed, you have to try. It’s just this single awkward bit, and then smooth sailing from there! Come on, I’ll guide you and help you through it.” Stede was using his best encouraging voice, knowing he’d selected something well within Ed’s abilities.

“I’m too fuckin’ hot, and I’m gonna fuck up my knee, and then no one will be getting anywhere. Is that what you want?”

“No, of course, not,” Stede paused, turning so he could look at Ed. “Can’t you go a little harder, just for a minute?”

“Arrgh, fine, I’ll try, but if I throw something out, I told you so.”

Ed woke up with Stede’s fingers in his hair, something he’d become quite good at not taking personally in the last month or so. Not that Stede was sleeping in anyone else’s bed, but he certainly didn’t mean anything more by it than he had before, just good friends comforting each other.

It was a good fucking thing to remember at the moment, because Ed had apparently rolled onto Stede’s shoulder while sleeping and flung an arm over his chest. Stede had curled his arm around Ed in response, his hand cradling Ed’s head. Ed continued to breathe deeply, feigning sleep, not quite ready to move.

#WIPWednesday for Ch 11 of In Name Only in which Stede contemplates running away but is hampered by his wardrobe. #OFMDfic

He nearly laughed at himself for assuming that was somehow a viable plan, given that he was desperately ill and in a nightgown. Nothing quite like fleeing from one’s inner terrors dressed like a Dickens character.

Stede naturally ran hot, and the multiple bouts of fever had wreaked havoc on his pajama supply. Ed had smirked when he brought him the nightgown, and Stede had explained they were terribly comfortable and everyone would be wearing them in the future. Now the joke was on him. He’d been told, for the first time in his life, that someone loved him, while dressed in a frilly white nightgown with delicate bows embellishing the neckline.

He whooped when it flew true as well, breaking into pieces that fell to the tarp with a satisfying clatter against all the other broken china. He scooped up one of the horrible plates and watched as it smacked into the brick, splintering apart into something momentarily beautiful like a supernova.

They'd already discussed it a bit because Stede was having trouble deciding between several options for this auspicious occasion. Or he had been undecided, until he’d learned what Ed was planning to wear. Once he knew that, there was no other choice. Still, he wanted to surprise Ed, for reasons he didn’t care to examine at all, so he downplayed his certainty.

“I have it narrowed down,” he amended. He didn’t have to clarify it was narrowed down to a single option.

“Sounds good. We’ve got a ton of time yet, what do you want to do?”

Stede gasped. “I’ll be getting ready! You don’t think these legs just wax themselves, do you?”

“Mate, you’re waxing your legs?” Ed sat down his coffee cup.

“I need to look my best while upstaging Lucius in an elegant white evening gown. Wait till you see what I’m doing with my hair, and the tiara!” Stede burst into giggles.

Ed followed, bent over with laughter, gasping in a breath to say, “You really had me going there for a sec. Ahhh.”

#WIPWednesday for Ch 8 of In Name Only in which Stede confesses something to Ed via sticky note. #OFMDfic

Ed yawned and slid down onto the couch. He thought he might lose it if Izzy dragged him to one more late-night meeting. He’d somehow missed dinner and didn’t have the energy to scrounge in the fridge. Instead, he was going to just veg out until his brain shut off and then go to bed. Only, on his descent to flat, he finally processed the teal square of a sticky note on top of a little pile on the coffee table.

He sat back up and leaned forward to look through the pile finding a soft blanket, a small glass roller bottle, and…a fucking sandwich, wrapped in wax paper. The note on it read: Another late night? One must eat! Please try this “sleepy time” fragrance roller - new product!!

Ed unwrapped the sandwich and took a bite, peanut butter and honey, dense and sweet. He chewed on it thoughtfully, finally noticing there was a second note: I thought you might like to try out this blanket as well. It's 100% cashmere. (I stole it!)

“No, just a drink.” Stede waited while Ed ordered one as well, and then ready to have the nerve-wracking bit done, said, “I think I should pay rent.”

“No.” Ed’s face was serious, narrowed eyes inviting no argument.

“Yes. I know I’m a bit…skint at the moment, but things are improving every month with the business and soon I won’t have to put everything back into growing it. I think it's important in the meantime to act as a man should and be responsible for the roof over my own head.”

“Mm-hmm. Is that the kind of monster you think I am? Making my own husband pay rent?”

“Technically! It’s only technically.”

“Still counts.”

“No, it doesn’t.”

“Sure. Then in six months I’m a viral ‘Am I the Asshole’ post, and I’d lose, rightly.”

They followed him across the room to a bar setup where a man with longish blonde hair was vigorously shaking a cocktail.

“Hi, I’m the Swede? I’m new,” he said.

“Really new, he’s staying with us for a bit while he finds a place to live. He said he could run a bar.” Roach rested a hand against the table and studied the set-out ingredients.

“I can. I’m an excellent bartender.” The Swede poured the drink from the shaker into a cup and garnished it before handing it to Frenchie, who grinned at them and eased into another clump of talking people.

“Pretty dab hand with a drink myself,” said Stede, offering the man a hand to shake. “Nice to meet you, Swede. I’m Stede. Ooh, that rings!”

Stede was clearly just being friendly, and yet, Ed felt the urge to toss an arm around him and make it clear that Stede was…his friend. He held out his hand to the Swede instead and also gave his name.

#WIPWednesday for Ch 5 of In Name Only in which Ed and Stede have a husband meeting. #OFMDfanfic

Stede studied him now across the metal patio table; they were seated outside to take advantage of the beautiful March day. Ed looked tired, lines at his eyes, worn. Thinner too, maybe.

“Are you eating?” The thought was out of Stede’s mouth before it really registered.

Ed huffed out a laugh. “Yeah, of course. Come on, I'm around food all day.”

“That's not an answer.” Stede paused, wondering how far he could really push this as Ed’s friend, trying not to feel that weirdly precarious between-state of not being solely that.

It had seemed like a cheeky joke, at the start, to call these things husband meetings. That’s what they were after all—meetings in which they conducted the business they had as husbands. It was mostly squaring the payment for the insurance premium and making sure Ed hadn’t received any of Stede’s bills. But it seemed that checking in with each other was also on the list, or at least, on Stede’s list.

Ed shifted, leaning back in his chair and meeting Stede’s eyes. “Maybe not enough. There’s been a lot. I get busy.”
