So many hard working people came together to organise these incredible events, thank you to all of them and also could I thank everyone who took part. 🧵3/3
I would like to thank the helpers, organisers and small businesses involved in the Baker Street Area Neighbourhood Association Street Party, the Bell Tower Association Street Party, Katesgrove Community Association Summer Fair and councillors in Battle who organised the Oxford Road Fiesta 🧵2/3
Reading community groups put on an incredible range of events this weekend and it was a privilege to be able to show my support. 🧵1/3
I am delighted to share the news that the Pink 22 Bus Route has been saved. This is a very important service which provides transport for older and disabled people, young people, and commuters. 🧵1/4
I asked the Minister for Nature about the role of re-wilding and tree planting in carbon capture, and how changes to agricultural practises can reduce carbon emissions.
I want to thank NHS staff for their hard work and dedication. I also thanked the Labour Government for investing in the NHS and for planning to rebuild the RBH.
I asked about the role the Department of Health & Social Care could play in improving public awareness about lobular breast cancer, and how training can be improved for doctors and other medical professionals. Find out more here: www.lobularmoonshot.org
Thanks to Nick, CADRA and Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service for all their work on river safety. I certainly learnt a lot, and you can too by watching the linked video on the use of water rescue throwlines, or email info@cadra.org.uk to arrange local training. www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLLk...
I had a wonderful time at the Raise the Roof Fete for St Peter’s at the weekend, where we also celebrated the 100th anniversary of Caversham Bridge being rebuilt. Thanks to all the volunteers for making this such a successful day.
For too long many hard-working residents have been trapped in leaseholds with terrible management companies and unreasonable service charges. The Labour Government is determined to reform this archaic system with the Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Bill.
Retail workers are essential to the UK economy and the backbone of our high streets. I am pleased that this Labour Government has made assault against a retail worker a specific offence to protect those who work so hard every day to serve local communities.
I am pleased to see the Government prioritising early years, opening Best Start family hubs across the country, providing free breakfast clubs and childcare, and ensuring children are ready to learn.
I asked the Minister for Water and Flooding about measures the government is taking to improve natural flood defences upstream of problem areas.
Great to attend the Reading Buses open day and hear about both the history and future of this amazing local success story.
This year's Waterfest was a wonderful celebration of our community and local history, and a great day out.
Reading Borough Council has just opened our town's outstanding new central library. Investment which is on top of keeping existing local libraries open. This is in stark contrast with many other councils, which have shut libraries.
I asked the Environment Secretary how the Government's fund to support innovation in farming will help protect the environment.
Thanks to the volunteers and organisers for another wonderful East Reading Festival, and to all those who attended to make it such a successful day.
My weekly update including: 📱 Social media ban for under-16s 💧 Government action on Thames Water 📚 New central library in Reading
I was so pleased to attend the Great Parliamentary Get Together event in memory of Jo Cox, inspired by her belief that we have more in common than that which divides us. Find out more about the foundation’s work here: www.jocoxfoundation.org
I was pleased to attend the opening of Reading’s new wonderful central library. It’s an amazing facility, right in the town centre, easy to access, with a fantastic range of books and a wonderful children’s area.
I thanked the Environment Secretary for her robust action to stand up for residents who are appalled by Thames Water.
The safety of children online is an issue I care deeply about. I am pleased that the Government has taken the bold decision to go further than any country by banning social media for under-16s and putting wider protections in place to give children their childhood back.
I was pleased to be able to show my support for Stuart Stephens, whose 13-year-old son Olly was murdered in an attack linked to online bullying. Stuart attended a meeting in Parliament about tackling online harms.
I praised the huge economic benefits of the Elizabeth Line, and the long term approach to investment in our country’s infrastructure that laid the foundations for its success.
During a debate on rail infrastructure I raised disabled access to taxis at Reading Station, and asked for ministers to support efforts to improve the design of this area of the station. Many thanks to local taxi drivers for bringing this to my attentions.
I would also like to thank Caversham AFC for organising and hosting this fitting tribute to Lewis, and the many local business who contributed or attended. Please find out more details about the event and the fundraising efforts below:
The event has already raised over £5400 for Meningitis Now. I would like to thank the team from the charity who came along to speak to the local community and to answer questions about Meningitis B. You can find out more about the charity’s important work here: www.meningitisnow.org
