Visited Chalke Valley History Festival today. Always terrific. Great conversation with Dan Jones, lots of books signed, and look at that great crowd!
This spring I had the chance to go to Normandy and follow in the footsteps of the men who were tasked with opening Dog-1 on Omaha Beach — the landing dramatized in Saving Private Ryan. The truth was far more incredible and moving than a movie ever could be. Out now on History Hit
Nice get to find the original covers! These are now being re-released with new titles, and there’s also a novella out there, too! (The novella is included as an appendix to the new book 1.)
Thrilled that my latest documentary for History Hit dropped today. On this third episode of Rebels, it’s Simon de Montfort!
At the Society for Military History, @bretdevereaux.bsky.social wins the unofficial prize for the single best slide of the conference for this depiction of a zombie Roman soldier. 👍👍
I recently to spent a week walking Omaha Beach, shooting a documentary about D-Day. Humbling. Gratifying. Heartbreaking.
Historical Fiction is such delightful fun! Cleopatra and Company didn’t do any of the things I had them do in my Shards books … we think. :)
Out now, a wee article related to my new history of the Hundred Years War, outlining some of the ways it Europeans to the New World. aspectsofhistory.com/the-two-hund...

Hello! Proof of life (at the end of a long day of filming):
After shooting in Harlech Castle yesterday we had no choice but to do more filming in Wales. I was, as you can see, very sad about this.
Finished up my tour of Cathar country with a visit to Lastours. Hiked up to all four surviving ruins, but this picture from a distance is my favorite.
Seriously, there ought to be a statue of Joan of Arc here somewhere.
They tell me that there are statues of Joan of Arc everywhere in France 🇫🇷 … and every time I come I fail to find one.
Out now on History Hit, the first episode of a two-parter with @thehistoryguy.bsky.social on the Road to Magna Carta: a look at the Battle of Bouvines! Enjoy!
I am enormously fortunate to have seen a great many medieval fortifications. I’m not sure any has astonished me more than Peyreperteuse. I took this pic from part of it looking at another part. And there’s another castle on the horizon at the right. ::swoon::
