Proud to serve as Rutherglen's Labour Member of Parliament. UK Energy Minister. Charity trustee and volunteer. Occasional runner.
Plans to re-power Whitelee could ✅power 650,000 homes ✅boost Scotland's economy by £330 million ✅create the jobs that give communities hope and a real stake in Britain's clean energy future
Solar power is right now generating more electricity than any other source! ☀️ We're making it easier for households + businesses to install solar panels on roofs and plug-in solar - helping cut energy costs, reduce pressure on the grid and support Britain’s clean energy future.
Delighted to be staying on as Energy Minister! In two years we've made a lot of progress but more to do - on affordability, strengthening our energy security and resilience, the Clean Power Mission, the great grid upgrade, public ownership through GB Energy and so much more.
A mission to end rough sleeping is exactly the scale of ambition we need as a country to solve a problem that simply shouldn't exist. Hopefully it will be shared by the Scottish Government too, where rough sleeping rose by 28% in a year - to the highest levels since 2010.
Catching some new (and some newly mapped!) streets in Darnley, Kennishead and Priesthill today! Lovely weather for it. #everysinglestreet
Have you read the Local Power Plan? Our partnership with Great British Energy will support more than a thousand community energy projects across Britain - read more here: www.gbe.gov.uk/local-power-...
A new chapter for community energy 📚☀️ Projects like Community Energy Newham’s at Stratford Library, powered by community owned solar panels are reducing energy bills, giving local people more control over their energy future and ensuring the benefits stay in the community.
Very on brand 10k race tonight to finish off the week - “run the blades” at Whitelee Windfarm! Amazing views and a great route (apart from a killer final hill) and lots of clean power - what’s not to like!
First day of the summer recess and I’m in very sunny Blantyre doing another street surgery - thanks to everyone who had a chat on their doorsteps!
Britain's energy system remained secure throughout the recent extreme heat. The grid stayed stable, no customers were impacted, and NESO successfully used standard operational tools to manage tight margins and maintain our energy security.
I have today written to the Chair of NESO to reiterate my support for the work NESO staff do to balance our grid 24/7 and to restate our commitment to taking seriously the allegations that have been made in recent days. We must now allow the independent review to run its course.
How can renewable energy benefit local communities? ⚡ Supporting apprenticeships ⚡ Funding local projects ⚡ Creating opportunities for young people Great visit to sunny Ayrshire to see community benefit funding in action 👇
One year on from our clean flexibility roadmap - and it's delivering. The UK is already Europe's leader in large-scale battery storage. Now we're going further: longer storage, cheaper bills, cleaner homegrown power. A flexible energy system that works for everyone.
It’s been a while but back to the #everysinglestreet running today! Glasgow is always changing - new streets added, old streets demolished, streets extended - and that means I’ve dropped back to 97% of Glasgow! Covered 7 missing streets in the east end today.
Thirty-ish years ago I was at Wallacetown Nursery School doing the egg and spoon race - it was amazing to go back and see the community-owned solar project they have developed. ☀️ The push to clean power, with community ownership at the heart is a race worth winning.
In an era of increased geopolitical uncertainty, our mission is to strengthen our energy security with homegrown power that we control, here in Britain. Here's how we're doing that 📽️
RES Group & Scottish Power working together is exactly what the clean power mission is all about - creating jobs in communities like Bellshill while driving forward the delivery of clean, homegrown energy. Great to join local MP @frankmcnallymp.bsky.social to open this new facility in Bellshill.
38 years on from the Piper Alpha disaster, we remember the 167 men who lost their lives in the world’s worst offshore oil tragedy. Their memory drives us to relentlessly pursue the highest standards of safety, vigilance, and care at sea.
Two years in, the direction is clear. More investment. More energy security. More good jobs. We're building a prosperous, cleaner, more secure Britain - and we're only getting started.
7⃣ Industry: Energy policy 🤝 industrial policy - investing in supply chains and building our energy future in Britain, with the jobs that go with it. We've kickstarted entirely new industries. Carbon capture and hydrogen projects are now moving from plans to construction.
6⃣ Communities: We’ve launched the biggest shift in ownership of energy in generations – backing communities to own their own energy through the Local Power Plan and providing £1bn of investment via @GBEgovuk to make it happen. Power and wealth in the hands of communities.
5⃣ Transition: The energy transition is creating jobs, but we're also supporting workers in oil and gas to access new opportunities. We published the North Sea Future Plan and set up a new Board to drive it forward so the North Sea can remain an economic powerhouse for the UK.
4⃣ Ownership: We launched the UK's first publicly-owned energy generation company in more than 70 years. @GBEgovuk is already: ☀️ Installing solar on schools and NHS sites 🌊 Backing floating offshore wind 🏭 Investing in British clean energy manufacturing
3⃣ Nuclear: We're backing the biggest expansion of new nuclear power in half a century. ⚛️@sizewellc reached its final investment decision ⚛️1st Small Modular Reactor project to be built at Wylfa ⚛️Record funding for fusion Long-term energy security needs long-term decisions.
2⃣ Building: We've ended years of delay and got Britain building again. Within 72 hours of taking office, we lifted the onshore wind ban in England. We've delivered two record-breaking renewables auctions, securing enough clean, homegrown power for the equivalent of 23m homes.
1⃣ Investment: £61.9bn secured in the Spending Review - the biggest programme of investment in clean energy in British history. Plus £100bn of private investment into clean energy since July 2024. From offshore wind to nuclear - investors are backing Britain's energy future.
Two years ago, we set out a mission: make Britain a clean energy superpower. And in that time we have delivered: ✅Record levels of investment ✅Stronger energy security ✅Thousands of new jobs across the UK A thread 🧵
We’re not even surprised anymore. A grifter, being slowly found out.
