Quantum horror at its finest. Dark Matter reads like a modern day The Time Machine by H.G.
Wells with the sci-fi elements of The Matrix.
Crouch does an amazing job at keeping the reader engaged from beginning to the very end. I enjoyed feeling the disorientation Jason felt as the plot unfolded and as more characters were (re) introduced and taken away. Each character felt appropriately fleshed out, and even the *extras* made me empathetic of their fates. I appreciated that the science was easy to follow and didn't feel like info dumping at any point. The change in POV's was pertectly timed as I didn't know what was real or a dream until the author wanted me to. It added to the horror without revealing too much
I never expected this novel to be a love story at its heart but I found myself really rooting for the Dessen family and feeling overwhelmed with Jason's character as he navigated this nightmare. It was a wild ride and I truly enjoyed every second of it.
The ending was the only ending that could possibly be in this universe.

I just wanted the story to end toh. I found the premise interesting, and usually I have 0 problem with open ended questions. I even thought Macy's character was fine. But the
"rites" made 0 sense. None at all. Lights, and frames, and bunnies, and regulating an entities emotions. It was all senseless to me. I understand a huge theme was literal and metaphorical OCD. But the "rites"failed to blend into whatever story was being told. even an abstract why of it all was nowhere to be found.
The ending was also bland. It wasn't satisfying or surprising in the least because Macy couldn't get her shit together. Idk.
Maybe once Ive thought it over my thoughts will change, but rn Im just bummed it wasnt even close to how good we used to live here was.

The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jobes

I'm not sure of Graham's writing style is for me.
He has brilliant ideas/concepts but I'm having a difficult time appreciating the execution. Not to say this novel doesn't have great moments, but his characters tend to be a bit one dimensional in their problem solving. Lewis's fan hyperfixation for example was weird, Gabe shrugging off the dogs was weird. Idk. The pacing was choppy and it felt like Graham didn't trust his readers to understand the story without every single horror moment being spelled out for them during and after. It was frustrating to get through. The final basketball scene was seriously over written, D's character was a teen yes, but it felt extremely juvenile that the final showdown included a basketball game with an Elk entity to the death lol

Final thoughts

I really wanted to love this book, or at least enjoy it more than I did. As a whole, the concept was excellent, but the way it was executed fell flat for me. While I appreciated the author's writing (choice in vocabulary, sentence structure etc) the contrast between "you" and Julia's internal dialogue was a lot. Her "dudespeak" drove me insane. Every other sentence starting with "hey" "man" made my eyes roll. None of the characters felt real. They didn't read like real people, which makes sense I guess as they all behaved like monsters (with the exception of her uncle But it made it difficult to stay *in* the story.

The Al's inner world was interesting to me, the monsters that formed reminded me a bit of The Thing which I liked. The author did well in capturing how annoying/uncanny Al is. The choice it made to default to "dudespeak" made me cringe so good job ig.

Overall it was incredibly okay. I may try another one of this author's books in the future.

I can’t get away from this fuckass author and her fuckass book. How she still has a fan base after describing a character’s tan skin as “dirty” is beyond me. Not once did she make a statement or offer an apology, NOTHING. If you don’t see the problem unfollow me, we are not friends.

We Used to Live Here. WOW. This novel is like if backrooms lore x haunting of hill house x and parasite had a scary little love baby. I have so many thoughts but I can't begin to express how this story will stay with me forever.
Personally, unwanted strangers forcing their way into my home is a huge phobia of mine so that as a baseline fear set the tone for me. The pacing of the story was perfect. Kliewer did an EXCELLENT job of allowing the reader to experience Eve's descent into madness while simultaneously making them question "what actually *is* real?" Despite the majority of this story taking place inside the home, it truly felt like the book became it's own sort of labyrinth as the reader was given extra transcripts/ documents/reports to dissect. And the PUZZLES.
The morse code, symbolism, the amount of thought and layering that went into building this world left me wanting more.
I appreciate that the tone of the book was neutral, Kliewer does a great job of not writing one-dimensional women and I appreciated how casual "partner" was used throughout. Eve and Charlie's relationship felt authentic and ! loved their dynamic.

In terms of the horror itself, I enjoyed every single scene. It never felt like too much.l understand people being upset that so much was left unanswered but omg that's the whole point. That is what makes it more horrific, the unknowing
Anyway that last bonus document had me messed up. I cant wait to read more of his work.

Spoiler free review for: That Which Feeds us A Hawaiian Gothic (My apologies for it being a bit short. I did love it. Im just really,really tired.)

This novel was a perfect cross between the novel Mexican Gothic by Sylvia Moreno Garcia and the movie Get Out. The author does a beautiful job of intertwining folk horror with the horrors of colonialism and gentrification. The supernatural elements were also incredibly well done, they never felt like too much or too little.
I feel like the pacing of the story was okay although some of it did begin to feel a bit repetitive. But because the novel was short it saved itself from losing my interest. I also didn't expect to tear up in the end but I did, it was so beautifully written, Ill be keeping an eye out for Keala Kendall's future works for sure.
