Spotlight on: Slow worms Slow worms are garden friends- they like slow-moving prey, and that means they eat slugs! They are also ovoviviparous, meaning the eggs hatch while they're still in the female's body, and so she ‘gives birth’ to live young.

It’s Dragonfly Week! The large and spectacular Golden-ringed Dragonfly is one of about 22 species of dragonfly that live in Wales. They are widespread, but generally favour streams and runnels in acidic habitats like heathlands. @britishdragonflies.bsky.social

It’s National Meadows Day! The vast majority of species-rich grasslands in Wales have been destroyed. Many that remain are cared for by committed individuals who invest their own resources into protecting them. Big shout out to the Meadows Groups in Wales who provide so much support. 🌼

Focus on: Sea Stock This wonderfully thick, grey, felty plant is in the cabbage family and produces stunning purple flowers. It grows mainly on sand dunes, and sometimes sea cliffs. In Wales, it is mainly restricted to the south coast from Pembrokeshire to Port Talbot.

Grazing goats! In our current edition, Ellie Baggett from Plantlife Cymru writes about her work through Natur am Byth to revive the fortunes of the scarce bryophytes of Stanner Rocks in mid Wales. How do you clear scrub and thick vegetation from treacherous rocky terrain? Goats, of course!

Spotlight on: Foxgloves The Latin name for Foxglove, Digitalis purpurea, means purple finger – relating to the shape and colour of the stunning flowers. It’s the plant source of the drug digitalis, used to treat heart problems. Foxgloves love dry, disturbed ground and dappled shade.

Spotlight on: Yellow-horned Poppy This unusual looking poppy species, with its horn-like seed pods up to 30cm long, was photographed near Swansea. It loves shingle banks and stony beaches. This makes it vulnerable to trampling, storm damage, and coastal development.

Gentle grey giants These are Poplar Hawkmoths, one of the commonest of our large hawkmoth species in Wales. They are abundant in gardens in May. As their name suggests, the caterpillars feed on poplars – but also willows. They can reach 9cm across!
