But I like to think my work has merit. That no machine can steal or undermine my voice. That no technocrat can get away with it, the crime of profiting off my livelihood, my labor, my humanity, all while robbing me of any dignity, any right I have to live well. Will Al replace me? I don't really think that question has reached a point of relevance (yet—perhaps that's for the 2027 volume to better determine). It's not smart enough yet, this fledgling, systemic theft.
So right now, the question is, how do we fight an industry that prioritizes profit over people? That suggests art and intellect can only be valued insofar as they can be automated and outsourced? A system of commerce that rewards and enshrines fraudulent behaviors, not as bug or by-product, but by design? The question isn't about AI, it's about industry, about monoculture, about the definition of progress.
The story is: The story that we tell ourselves. And at least for now, today, in this collection, it's the one where we our experience, our aliveness, our compassion—prevail.

The story is: This is a volume of the best of American SF/F, and therefore its Americanness should not be overlooked or ignored. Tilt it this way in the light, and the story of the United States is one of reckoning, of betrayal, of shame. It's one of harm, of targeted propaganda against the most vulnerable among us, making scapegoats of the immigrant, BIPOC, queer, neurodivergent, and trans communities who only want what everyone wants: to live.
Shift it again, and it's a story of humanism, of resistance, of making deeply personal that which touches those we love. Even if any of us have been fortunate or left unscathed, we cannot deny the presence of pain. It's the historic marches, the art made in protest, the way the tide turns, little by little, yet more every day.
Tonally, the volume opens with loss, disillusionment, betrayal; it floats on a current, on the reminder that somewhere, there is help to be found; it stumbles over the question of belonging, of what any of us will sacrifice for the chance to live as we desire; and it lands, I believe, with the sense that faith, persisting and unshakable, will be enough to win.
Sometimes, the story is: I want to make it in America.
Sometimes, the story is: I want to make this my America.
But most of the time, the story is: I want America to love me back.
