So, I saw the Hadestown proshot, and I just have ONE note...

watercolor postcard: 6 wordless comic panels. Each panel is a medium or close-up shot of Becky. Panel 1: Becky is in a darkened movie theater, smiling and taking a handful of popcorn. There's a trombone floating above her head, which emits a warm light. Panel 2 is similar to panel 1, but above Becky's head there's a lit candle, a red flower, and an electric guitar. All the floating doodads are from the musical Hadestown. Panel 3: a slightly closer view of Becky. The movie theater background has been replaced by the green of Persephone's dress, with some green brocade flowers, a wine bottle, flowers, a heart, and a mug in the air. Becky is repressing happy tears. Panel 4: the lighting is abruptly colder, and the brocade pattern is black on silver. Becky has dramatic blue eyeshadow and dark lipstick like the muses. Floating above her head are two coins, a lady's high-heeled boot, an accordion, a small thought balloon with a toilet, and a silver flask. Panel 5: Becky is closer up, at a Dutch angle, and looking uncomfortable. An industrial lamp swings above her head, casting an orange glow and deep shadows. The thought balloon with the toilet has gotten bigger. It presses against two panel borders and the side of Becky's head. Panel 6 is even more surreal. The background is the color of Becky's skin, and a flower, trombone, guitar, dance shoe, and mug collide with a nose, grimacing mouth, and two eyes that have toilets for pupils.

Back of postcard: Becky runs out of a movie theater that's showing Hadestown. Her body is tense and her eyes are spirals. There's a fish eye perspective that makes the hallway of the movie theater look strange. There's a bathroom in the distance. Becky thinks, Why don't they ever have intermission?!

Today's Portland postcard:

POV: You can either lift your bike overhead and leap over multiple bike wheels, or duck under this rack and the next one, bumping your head on the rack and jostling several bikes as you sheepishly take the long way around

POV looking toward the pride parade from in between two bike racks. You’re completely blocked in by two e-bikes parked on the ground and two bike wheels from the racks on either side of you. There definitely isn’t room to walk a bike out.

I love when an event has bike parking, but could they PLEASE space the racks far enough apart that you can actually access the whole rack? I was parked by the fence and just about split a pants seam getting my bike back out.

Temporary bike racks (like a sawhorse made of metal bars). You’re supposed to lift your front wheel over the crossbar. Right now each rack has 2 to 3 bikes on it. The aisles between racks are completely blocked by e-bikes, other people’s wheels or, in one case, by part of another rack.

Drivers think it’s absurd when a new piece of infrastructure forces them to go slightly out of their way. But people who walk, bike, and take transit experience that all the time. Bike & pedestrian routes are often indirect in order to keep them safe from cars or to maximize traffic flow for cars.

How can the public get involved?
The city is holding a series of weekend community listening sessions spread out across a number of city parks on June 13 and June 14, and collecting an online survey.
The public will also be able to submit comments and testimony at the PCEF and Prosper Portland meetings, and at city council hearings ahead of the August 12 term sheet vote.

Old building lovers of Seattle: "City Erased" is on display at the UW's Gould Hall, across from the College Inn. The exhibit runs through May 29 and is free and open to the public.

Also included are what Renouard calls
"quieter stories" that reveal the ordinary fabric of a city that progress chose to pave.
In Seattle and other cities across America, that path fell disproportionately on immigrant neighborhoods and communities of color.
Case in point: "the castle," a boardinghouse at Sixth and Jefferson whose records drew architecture graduate Rebecca Schaffer into archives and yielded what many old buildings contain - the comedy and pathos of everyday life.
Weddings. Burglaries. Speeding tickets.
Edward Harris, a "castle" resident facing 29 traffic violations in 1951, admitted to the judge, "I guess my foot's a little heavy on the accelerator.”

One family gave the building its soul. Tolia
"Tony" Tolias, a Greek immigrant and sea captain, arrived in Seattle in 1918 and stayed for more than 30 years. Schaffer says she imagines him in retirement watching the boats come into harbor while the city slowly filled in, views narrowing.
Tolias died in 1956, two years before the freeway demolished his block.
"It's bittersweet," Schaffer says. "It's made me feel a sort of grief over a loss that I never knew."

Student Leslie Diaz de Leon Flores puts it another way. The old records, she says,
"provide a treasure hunt to understand the secret lives of buildings — to start to imagine what it was like to live in this city, in this particular year, and to walk down those streets."

In a public notice released on April 22, 2026, the FCC is asking Americans to submit comments about whether the TV Oversight Management Board (TVOMB) should create new TV ratings to alert viewers to "transgender and gender non-binary programming" and "the discussion or promotion of gender identity themes."

Text with highlight on "representative of a range of family values." Full text: Recently, parents have raised concerns that controversial gender identity issues are being included or promoted in children's programs without providing any disclosure or transparency to parents. Specifically, the industry guidelines that parents rely on are rating shows with transgender and gender non-binary programming as appropriate for children and young children, and doing so without providing this information to parents, thereby undermining the ability of parents to make informed choices for their families. Consistent with Congress's vision for the ratings system, we seek comment on whether the industry's approach is continuing to provide the information that is relevant to parents today.

By passing the relevant legislation in 1996, Congress acted to protect the right of parents to decide when and how to discuss mature topics with their children, and to know if and when their children are being exposed to these topics in their TV viewing. Accordingly, we seek comment here on any changes that can or should be made to the current ratings system to ensure that it is responsive to the issues that parents confront today. This includes any changes that may make sense for the TVOMB to ensure that it is representative of a range of family values. We also ask how ratings can be applied consistently across broadcast, MVPDs, and streaming platforms.
