My Darkest Prayer by SA Cosby It’s his first book and he quickly went on to be a much more accomplished writer. But it’s very enjoyable, feeling like an elevated men’s adventure pulp story.
Saving Face (2004) It’s amazing how many things this movie is and how it does them all so well. It’s a lesbian romcom, it’s a messy mother daughter story, it’s a generational immigrant story…all balanced and each given enough space to resonate.

Good as Dead by David & Maria Lapham I’m a longtime fan of the Laphams going back to Stray Bullets so I was all over this book. It’s like if the drama and action of Yellowstone happened in the town of Twin Peaks. Really good stuff.

Hollywood by Thomas Hart Benton The complexity, the depth, the stylization, the story it tells, everything about it immediately sucked me in. Probably the first painting that I said was my favorite painting and it’s stuck with me.

Absolute Flash vol 2 by Jeff Lemire, Nick Robles and friends I read a quote once, I think by Tom Spurgeon, that he felt like he’d got to a place in his life where he didn’t need to read any more Green Lantern comics. A very well-made book but maybe I’m simply not into superheroes much anymore.
Youth of the Beast (1963) A Yakuza Yojimbo that’s one of the most substantially stylish things I’ve ever seen. I went into this knowing nothing about Seijun Suzuki and came out a giant fan. Also, the movie theater as a crime lair is the absolute coolest.
The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976) Having been to some bottom barrel strip clubs over the years, this nails everything about that particular aura. If this wasn’t a primary inspiration for David Lapham’s Stray Bullets I’d be amazed. They’re playing in the same themes, characters and visuals.
