The sanctuary of #ScottishChurchOfTheWeek, Newlands South Church, contains a fine hammerbeam roof, with bold stone arches on low octagonal piers leading to its side aisles. With a neatly carved oak pulpit, communion table and choir stalls beneath, it certainly qualifies for #WoodensDay. 🧵1/2

Scottish architect Harry Edward Clifford designed #ScottishChurchOfTheWeek, Newlands South Church in Glasgow, built in 1903. Stone from Giffnock and Auchenheath was used in the construction. That building replaced the original Fred Rowntree Newlands building from 1899. 🧵1/2

Three beautiful stained glass windows at #ScottishChurchOfTheWeek, Holy Cross, Davidson's Mains add to the overall warmth and colour of the church. The great east window, designed by renowned artist Christopher Webb, was dedicated in October 1930, and depicts scenes from the life of Christ. 🧵1/2

Rev Scott Rennie, the Chairperson of the General Trustees of the Church of Scotland, has responded in the letters page of today's Herald to journalist Sandra Dick's "Big Read" in the weekend edition that explored the next chapters being written in the story of many of Scotland's closing churches:

We missed these time-travelling images last week! One of our Hon Vice Presidents, Rev Dr Peter Sutton, led a commemorative service at First Scots Presbyterian Church in South Carolina, where everyone donned historic garb to recreate a service from 1776 as part of the USA 250th celebrations.

The building is constructed in the form of a Greek Cross, with a chancel, adjoining vestry, nave, two transepts and a truncated bell tower over the crossing. Funds for Peddie’s vision of a taller bell tower were never found. Read more at 👇 www.scotlandschurchestrust.org.uk/church/holy-... 🧵2/2

Holy Cross, Davidson's Mains in Edinburgh is #ScottishChurchOfTheWeek. Completed in 1913, this Romanesque church was the work of local architect John More Dick Peddie, and local stone, quarried from Corstorphine, was used. Much of this material was shaped in a “random rubble” fashion. 🧵1/2

It's #FontsOnFriday time, so here is the exquisitely carved baptismal font from St. Mary's, Dalmahoy, our #ScottishChurchOfTheWeek. This Victorian Gothic gem was added in 1883, during alterations to the church funded by Alice, Countess of Morton, in memory of her niece Evelyn Cavendish. (1/2)

A Glasgow businessman has further outlined his ambition to convert the magnificent A-listed St Columba's Parish Church in St Vincent Street, Glasgow, into "a music venue, a bit like Oran Mor, with a food offering and a good whisky bar." (1/2)

A small graveyard has many interesting memorials and its grounds host an early medieval incised Christian cross slab, dating from the 9th to 11th century, which was moved there around 1915 having been reused in the past as a gatepost. www.scotlandschurchestrust.org.uk/church/st-ma... 🧵2/2

A ribbed, deep blue ceiling, with painted stars overhead, greets visitors in the chancel at #ScottishChurchOfTheWeek, St Mary's, Dalmahoy. Boldly patterned encaustic tiles line the floors and there is a striking collection of Victorian and modern stained glass, most notably above the altar. 🧵1/2

"Salvation Army closes Campbeltown corps after 127 years" End of an era for the Argyll town as the Salvation Army closes its church & hall there after five generations. Its congregation have been urged to try other Campbeltown churches as the group's nearest church is 126 miles away in Clydebank.
