Reading for the first time, if you can believe it (!). Brilliant, prophetic, disturbing work. A friend mentioned that he can’t really read Gibson right now, since he was right about 80% of things…
The Midwest Black Book Fair’s gonna be so much fun! I’m doing a workshop with some of my brilliant pals that I hope you’ll come through for. ✌🏽 Tickets are FREE, but going fast (they already have 350+ registrants!).
Back in that Colorado fold! 🙌🏽❤️ Annual polar plunge up in the mountains yesterday…as usual, I was the wimp (but I did it).
BIPOC meditation retreat with truly fabulous guiding teacher Tuere Sala was truly a game changer! Thanks to Common Ground Meditation Center, Tuere, and this wild and committed crew for bringing it to fruition. 🙏🏾
Don’t miss the release of @sunyungshin.bsky.social ‘s new memoir, HEART EATER! It’s groundbreaking, I assure you.
Here’s the promo image and details on adoptee-centered events I mentioned in an earlier post, the weekend of September 11!
Amsterdam did not disappoint! Every day, around 75K residents of the city commute for work, play, or both on their bikes. It’s pretty much the best way to get around here…but you better have your wits about you! Cause these folks are serious. It’s such a beautiful and manageable city. 12/10.
Last stop on the whirlwind but fantastic book tour at institutions in Germany! 🤩 An amazing global studies/racism/politics class at this 150 year old K-13 school in Kaiserslautern. Did a reading of the new PBs, then discussed writing and publishing, George Floyd, resistance to ICE invasion in Mini.
Every once in awhile, my son and I happen to wear the same shirt. Today was one of those days. I explained the mash up of the Star Wars Rebel Alliance symbol and the MN state bird (the loon) that popped up all around Mpls during the ICE surge this winter to my friend here. She was impressed. ✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽
Passed by the Gestapo headquarters in Stuttgart earlier today. It has a very particular resonance after living through the ICE invasion In Minneapolis this winter. ☠️☠️☠️
The Main Stuttgart Public Library is an absolute fantasy for bibliophiles! 🤩 My friend who lives here said that she thinks the capitalist government that built it was trying to placate the intellectual class. I said that I wish more governments would try to placate intellectuals…
Julia was a German exchange student at my beloved weird small public high school in A2 MI in the early ‘90s. She was always such a sweetheart. 🙏🏾 We haven’t seen each other in years, so it was so moving to reconnect in her hometown of Stuttgart yesterday. “You’re the same!” we both exclaimed.
Just finished lunch at a cute local cafe in small town Siegen! Now off to tour the castle on the hill…
Made it to Cologne! 🙌🏽 Will give a talk and Q and A with some German high school students tomorrow night, but for now, we’re enjoying throwing hats for random street performers.
Just an incredible panel keynote on book banning at the American Studies conference at the University of Munster tonight! @edrabinski.bsky.social @heykellyjensen.bsky.social @corinnanorue.bsky.social Maude Hines and Cedric Essi each brought something different but essential to the conversation. 🧵
Wish I could make this…It’ll be great!👍🏽 Please come support all the great work Take Action does in and with community…and get your groove on with your people. ♥️♥️♥️
Thanks to my friend and colleague Dr. Silvia Schultermandl, I got to deliver the opening keynote at the University of Munster American Studies conference on kinship tonight. My children were in the audience, and everyone was so gracious and supportive about my work around the kinship of loss. 🙏🏾
Thanks to everyone who came out to the launch of my new children’s picture book, WHERE IS MY SISTER? at @redballoonbookshop.bsky.social last night! Especially my dear friend @kaokaliayang.bsky.social whose moderating was hilarious, insightful, and on point. ✌🏽🤩 @uminnpress.bsky.social
My daughter and her friends will be selling their artwork here this weekend…I know they would love to see you! ✨
Love both these dudes. @andrewkarre.bsky.social at Dutton, and Erik Anderson at @uminnpress.bsky.social As I always say, good editors are worth their weight in gold. And I have been privileged to work with each of them for so many years now. 🙏🏾✨✨
Unwrapping the new book. WHERE IS MY SISTER, a children’s picture book about stillbirth and infant loss, illustrated by Huy Von Lee, pubs May 19. @uminnpress.bsky.social
My @minneapoliscollege.bsky.social students are the best thing about this job! 👍🏽✨✨✨ Fatima has been on me about getting signed copies of my books, and finally followed me down to my car after class to get them. I love the way I am learning her stories from her writing, as she will now learn mine.
So excited to have a short story included in this volume with these luminaries! ✨✨✨ “Me and Diane Nash” centers on a young Black girl’s encounter with an ICE raid at her school, and a mysterious visitor who shows her the way forward.
Such a great night at @loftliterarycenter.bsky.social with all my writer people! ✌🏽💫 The Catch the Fire inaugural benefit was a huge success. Thanks to everyone who came out and everyone who made it happen. I love this community.
