When the Splinter colonists arrived with the galaxy's most advanced combat mechs, they faced a question: what do you do with weapons technology when you've sworn off violence? The answer was sports. They built arenas instead of battlefields, turning combat into performance art.

Five hundred years later, mech sports are fundamental to Therian culture. Families inherit team loyalties. Championship matches draw planetary audiences. The academies became the natural home for elite competition, creating rivalries that go back centuries.

Three sports dominate.

Clash is team combat. Five vs five, capture the flag, eliminate opponents, substitute eliminated players back in. Ten minute rounds, five rounds per match. Championship Clash draws the largest crowds. Most professional pilots came up through collegiate programs.

Trials is individual competition. Sprint courses, precision challenges, endurance runs. You versus the course, no teammates. Your time goes on the board next to everyone else's. Trials prove your mastery of your mech.

Flow is performance gymnastics. Choreographed routines judged on difficulty, execution, and synchronization between pilot and SONA. Judges evaluate how unified you appear. Flow is where the bond becomes art.

Other sports exist. Fabe is ritual combat entertainment. Stalk is professional tag, hunter versus hunted across sprawling arenas. Leap tests spatial problem solving through parkour courses. Sprint races, endurance events, water sports. But when people say "mech sports," they usually mean Clash, Trials, or Flow.

These sports are how Theria took technology designed for destruction and made it about excellence instead.

A copy of writing on Mechatheria TTRPG about growing up, sadly too long for alt text, here's the summary.

Therian Life Stages Summary

Early Childhood (0-3): Parents receive three years of state-funded parental leave, split however they choose.
Primary School (3-18): Fifteen years of broad education emphasizing exploration over specialization. Academics, arts, sports, and socialization all get attention. Around 15-16, students can pursue competitive activities (sports leagues, advanced academics, apprenticeships) but must maintain general education.

The Wandering (18-20): A cultural institution, not optional. Two years of state-supported exploration with stipend, free transit, dedicated hostels. Short-term seasonal work only; no binding commitments. Purpose: self-discovery away from parental or institutional expectations.

Settlement (20+): Choose a path; civil service, trade, or college. College includes a one-year orientation before declaring a major, then four years of focused study. This is when elite mech sports programs can offer full recruitment (only seasonal invitations allowed during Wandering).

Core Philosophy: Don't rush childhood or commitment. Give people time and resources to figure themselves out before locking in life decisions. By 21-22, you're expected to have chosen your direction though reality doesn't always cooperate.

You're in the head of a thirty-foot tall wolf. Not piloting it, Being it.

When the mech turns its head, you're not watching screens. You're looking through is eyes. When it drops to all fours in a hunting crouch, you feel the ground through its claws. The digitigrade legs coil with tension that's yours now.

The mech is three parts: the frame (thirty-ish feet of high performance machinery, armor and carbon fiber), you (reclined in that oversized head), and the INCONU core (the quasi-living AI that links you both). The animal theming your mech carries is structural, not decorative. Wolf mechs have angular plates and elongated profiles, vicious claws, and that sleek predator head. A cowl of what looks like guard hair is thick armor that completes the aesthetic.

You customize your mech to suit you. Better actuators for the joints, lighter plating, upgraded sensors. Then you start changing yourself to suit it. Drugs to sharpen your reflexes, increase your aggression during matches. Surgery to make the sync faster, more stable. Implant retractable claws into your hands, just to make them feel like yours again. You get cosmetic work done to match the look of their mech. Why not? You're becoming it anyway.

The thing that makes you whole starts eclipsing everything else. The gap between who you were and who you're becoming grows wider. The only ones who understand are your teammates. Some people try to pull you back. They say you're changing too fast, going too far, that you're not yourself anymore.

But the change doesn't feel fast enough to you and you've never felt more yourself. Every day not synced feels wasted. Every modification delayed feels like staying trapped. They want you to slow down, but you've felt what it's like to be complete. To be yourself. You can't unfeel that.

You can't go back. You wouldn't want to anyway.

What Is This Game?
Mechatheria is a game about college kids with giant mechs who compete in high-stakes sports while figuring out who they are. It's melodrama, tournament arcs, found family, and the terrifying joy of becoming yourself.
Your character pilots a mech with a quasi-living core called an INCONU - an instinctive control unit with animal-level intelligence that bonds to you specifically. It doesn't speak in words. It feels. It wants. It knows you in ways nobody else does. And here's the thing: without that bond, you feel wrong. Muted. Like you're watching your own life from outside. When you sync with your mech, everything clicks. Colors are brighter, thoughts seem clearer, everything is finally real.
The problem is, that relationship is hungry. The more you sync with your INCONU, the deeper the bond gets. The deeper the bond, the harder it is to be apart. You start skipping class to be in the mech bay. You tune out conversations because you're thinking about your next match. The thing that makes you whole starts to eclipse everything else.
That's the engine of this game. Not tactics. Not optimization. The slow seduction of becoming something you can't come back from.

Who Is This Game For?
People who want to feel things at the table. People who like sports stories where the score matters less than the journey. People who've experienced that ache of wanting to be yourself and not knowing how. People who like melodrama played straight - not ironic, not detached, fully committed to characters caring too much about things that matter.
If you want to optimize mech builds, there are great games for that. This isn't one of them.
If you want to watch your character fall in love, blow up their family relationships, do something impossible in the big match, and emerge transformed - welcome to Mechatheria.
