State appointed super Mike Miles artificially inflated New Education System campuses' college and career readiness scores (that count for state ratings) by putting 50-70% of juniors, many who would otherwise take Algebra II, in remedial algebraic reasoning classes. Insanity!

Education System_(NES) high schools were abruptly pulled out of Algebra I and placed into a remedial math course called Algebraic Reasoning/Texas College Bridge.
This move was not made to help students grow academically. Instead, we believe students were moved into this less rigorous course to artificially inflate campus accountability ratings, at the expense of student learning. Just sitting through the Algebraic Reasoning course and clicking through the online modules increases a school's A-F rating, even if students never pass the state's college readiness assessment attached to the class. It's a loophole that state- appointed Superintendent Mike Miles is exploiting at an unprecedented scale,

Records obtained from the Houston ISD along with publicly available data from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) reveal that the district's state-appointed Superintendent Mike Miles shunted about half of all iuniors at NES high schools into this course. At some schools as many as 70 percent of juniors were similarly demoted into less challenging classes
NES high schools are all located in under- resourced, predominantly Black and Latino neighborhoods, which have borne the brunt of the state's destructive takeover policies. By comparison, less than 5 percent of all juniors at non-NES high schools in more affluent communities, including Debakey, Carnegie Vanguard, Challenge, HAIS, Heights, HSPVA and Lamar, were placed in this remedial course,

Again, nearly 20% of our teachers are now uncertified. Before the takeover, that number was 0.3%. Not all uncertified teachers are bad, but without veteran teachers to help them, and with insane admin hoops to jump through, the burn out rate is going to be through the roof--and thats best case

The composition of HISD's workforce has changed as well. University of Houston researchers found the number of first- year teachers increased 64.7 percent after the takeover, while the share of uncertified teachers rose from 0.3 percent in 2016-17 to 19.8 percent in
2024-25.

This isnt even like... the worst year of this. The first year of the takeover we lost 1/2 of our teaching staff. Last year we retained more--58.6% of teachers remained at the same campus, but HISD kept staff settled at a much higher rate (on average) before the takeover (74.8%).

A University of Houston study released ir January found teacher retention had already been declining before the state takeover but accelerated afterward. Of HISD's 11,495 teachers during the 2023- 24 school year, 58.6 percent remained at the same campus the following year. Another 12.4 percent moved to schools outside HISD, 7.9 percent left teaching for other public-school jobs and 12 percent eft Texas public schools altogether

Here is what parent Tracy Lisewesky found via monthly FOIAs: HISD had 274 schools last year. The unelected school board voted to close 12, so we have 262. Last year FORTY SEVEN SCHOOLS had at least a 50% turnover rate in teaching staff over the course of the year. One had 139% turnover!!

I admit to surprise that TEA is actually doing what they are LEGALLY REQUIRED TO DO. That said, I absolutely do not trust TEA or Houston ISD to actually follow through and stop Miles's warehousing of sped students. TEA arrives with empty platitudes while the district marches on to Mike Miles's tune

Naranjo said she was happy that her son would return to the same school as his siblings and that the response coulc bring sweeping change to the district But she's concerned the district hasn't followed through yet with the agency's order.
"I was actually happy considering wanted him to go to the same school because that way he wouldn't be separated from his brother," Naranic said. "But then when I called the district about him going to the same school, and they're still telling me that he's going to go to the school that they assigned him."

Everyone: welcome the Derpy Tiger cake! Celebrated youngest's birthday today. She is turning 6! And yes, I did cry over making this cake. ADHD hubris, and 5lbs of butter strikes again...

While dealing with vomiting and fears of dehydration, ive been helping 5yo with a school project about great white sharks. She let me give her a little art lesson, so we talked about breaking a reference image into rectangles and looking for the large shapes to sketch. Alt has description of steps

Oh look! I found one of the MAP test scores worksheet! Just think how fun it must be as a kid to go up and grab a pink worksheet to take back to your desk for all your friends to see that you scored low! Miles truly understands what makes kids tick: SHAME! Just pumpin up those self-loathing scores!

Shoot for your goals worksheets and posters. These are worksheets kids fill out based on their map scores (and projected scores). The worksheets are color coded so each student can assess how poorly they scored compared to their classmates. They do this at least 3x a year if not more.

Once the students complete their quiz, they pick up their additional worksheet from a bucket. These are color coded by achievement. L is failing, "equivalent to a 60-68" and is in a red bucket. An A worksheet wins you a new worksheet from the "A" blue bucket. Kids have to publicly sort themselves!
