“Angel as the face of this place,” said Vox. He withdrew his silver cigarette case and offered one to Valentino, who took it between his long, thin fingers. “We could leverage his image.”

“Oh, Voxxy, stop. Enough business for the night,” whined Valentino, leaning in close as Vox struck a match. Vox bit the inside of his cheek to keep from rolling his eyes. The man had amassed a unique position of power, but ran it about as well as a bully in a sandbox. With Vox’s help, he could have the whole playground, if only he wasn’t so lazy.

“Last thing, I promise. I’m just saying, with Velvette’s connections on the mainland, we could develop a full-blown campaign,” said Vox, his eyes on Valentino’s long lashes as the man inhaled until the tip glowed. “Drive traffic to the island. Get them to come to us. Moths to the flame. Then, we give them a taste of the goods. Maybe spike a signature cocktail. Make them thirsty for more.”

Valentino chuckled, coughing a little, and sat back in his seat. “And what about the rest of the freakshow?” He gestured lightly to the stage where Kitty was still struggling to exit, wobbling into the wings. “How much longer do we have to work with little Miss Morningstar?”

Vox shrugged. “As long as she owns a stake in the club.”

“So buy her out.”

“She won’t sell. Trust me, I’ve extended every offer,” grumbled Vox. Charlie Morningstar wasn’t just another islander. She came from wealth – real wealth – on the mainland, and had access to lawyers Vox couldn’t sway. A rare occurrence. “Maybe if we–”

With a loud sigh, Valentino picked up his cards once more. “No more, Voxxy, you promised. Go see what’s taking Angel so long.”

“He’s the final act, isn’t he?” asked Vox, glancing at the stage. But the spotlight was empty.

He frowned, blue eyes roving the floor, searching for that signature blonde mop, but only caught sight of Charlie’s golden braid in the dim lighting, where she was crouched in concern watching her one-eyed lackey gesticulate wildly near the foot of the stage.

His eyes narrowed, and snapped his fingers. Across the table, Rocky and Travis looked up from their cards. Vox jerked two fingers at the stage, and the two lackeys quickly folded their hands and left the section.

Vox sighed, swirling the dregs of his gin martini, and glanced at Valentino. He seemed distracted by the game again. Good.

The band struck up a drumroll, then a fast-paced showstopper. The previous acts flooded the stage, KeeKee leading Kitty by the arm in an attempt to steer her. A couple of fan dancers fluttered across the front, masking the performers in the back. Vox squinted, but between the feathers and the sequins he couldn’t quite–

Travis was waving at him from the side curtain, shaking his head furiously.

Fuck.

Vox got to his feet, catching Valentino’s attention.

“Where are you off to, Voxxy?”

Vox smirked at him, trailing a hand along the back of his neck.

“Just business,” he said. Val groaned, moving to stand, but Vox laid a palm on his shoulder. “Ah ah, you stay and enjoy your game. I’ll take care of this myself.”

Val smiled at that. “You spoil me, Papi.”

Vox let his fingers twist in the silk of Val’s scarf before letting go. “A promise is a promise.”
